cashto wrote:QUOTE (cashto @ Mar 16 2019, 03:29 PM) You have a strange habit of putting quote marks around modified versions of my words that turn them into something completely different than what I actually said.
if I wanted to quote you wholesale I would use the quote feature, which I do, and the use of quotations marks in the presence of actual quote features to indicate paraphrasing is not unclear in this context.

I mean I get that there are nuances to writing that are often lost on people, but it turns out that the way you wrote your papers in school isn't how people write on forums with regards to sourcing, citing, and quotation usage. If it is ambiguous to you that I use quotation marks here to indicate a paraphrase and the actual quote feature for actual quotations, well tbh that just goes back to my point that you don't pay attention to what I write. I've done it for 10+ years across multiple boards and for some reason the only time people can't figure it out is when I use it to paraphrase *them.*

I'm quite particular about word choice, enjoy writing, have a huge tendency to get nerd-sniped, and have no concept of how much other people do or don't get from my writing.

As a result of the above, I tend to use lots of words. Throughout my academic career I've had more trouble staying under maximum than above minimum. I genuinely believe that if you don't have more to say about a subject, you just haven't thought about it long enough.

See, I like writing too. I think a lot about my writing actually. I'm perfectly capable of generating a wall of text. But I've slogged through enough of other people's turgid prose, and been involved in too many endless debates, to not to have learned a thing or two along the way.

I look at the structure of my writing. I think about my main point and whether I'm really amplifying it, or whether I'm just making a parenthetical statement or unnecessary digression. Do I need to show all of my math? How much of it is relevant?

I worry if my sentences are too long. I think about all the little words that could be omitted, the "clutter" in my writing.

I would rather hold back a sentence, rather than unload everything I've got and then spend the rest of the time having to defend my weakest points where I'd rather defend the strongest.

I actually spend more time thinking about what NOT to write. It's not that I can't say more, it's that I can but choose not to. It's like jazz: it's the notes you don't play.

To get good at writing you HAVE to have a concept of what other people are getting from your writing. It's like trying to get good at Allegiance without looking at whether your bullets are landing.

So here's the deal Cashto:

You don't think I'm a good writer. That's cool. You don't have to read my posts. I am pretty careful to structure everything I write, in fact, in such a way as to allow for people skimming it to understand it without having to read the whole thing!

But I show my math because some people like reading things.

So, yeah, your advice is reasonable... if you're giving it to a 5th grader.

(Also, you should stop thinking about how to declutter your writing and how to use that clutter, but you'll probably just dismiss this parenthetical as me not knowing what I'm talking about.)

Sorry, your writing is perfect and everyone loves it. Apologies for insinuating otherwise.
