Mmhmm, i still miss the days when StormStrike and me would have retarded games on RPS with all the newbies.

Let not forget that every newbie and their brother LOVED phoenix as well, even if they got their asses kicked.

Alleg was simply more fun back then, even if it was less balanced.

In a few months, I'll have more time and can work out a more detailed tracking approach.

Oh . and I can do <5 as well . .. .just to see what the diff is.
Now tracking:

http://allegiance.fragfest.net/stats/

Main page tracks total online and 15 and up.
New player graph tracks 7 and under and 5 and under.

I know our retention sucks, but I'd be interested to know how other free games fair, to see how far off we really are.

The fact is that there are horrible, awful, games that have many many more players than Allegiance, and it is a shame really.

In fact, given all the things y'all have been doing to improve the newbie experience over the last couple of years, I wouldn't be surprised if newbie retention is the highest it's been in five years! Why is the playerbase shrinking? Because you morons are driving off all the goddamn vets!

I disagree. Most games are short lived and have transient player bases, either that or they continually release new content and updates to keep the masses occupied.

Allegiance benefits from neither of these and relies on 2 big things: the gameplay and the community.

Most vets leave either because they get bored of the game or just move on in life and silently fade into inactivity. I would suspect that very few vets are actually driven away by the community (there are exceptional cases, of course), because let's be honest, once you have invested all this time into integrating yourself into the game and the community you generally stick with it. It's just that the ones who do leave because they feel they have been "driven away" always make (or try and make) a giant @#(!storm.
