I don't agree with you minigun. GB lost it's empire and isn't that important than it was a century ago in a globalized world. Just a small market compared to the global players like China, USA, Brazil (Mercosur), India, EU, ...

Everybody is equal. It's just that some are more equal than others.

No matter what FR may think and "push for", I suspect that DE & IT may consider a more pragmatic response. Britain leaving the EU is in nobody's interest. Merkel realises there is a possibility of UK parliamentary intervention . She is playing a wise game, Juncker has been reined in from his predictably I'll judged, heavy handed response. If it fails, then we may well see a tougher line more compatible with French desires.

Ask Estonia, Denmark, The Czech Republic & Poland how they feel about the UK departure and you may well get a different response than the one from the "Main EU leaders" based on what their leaders have been saying for the last week.
EU leadership may not have to craft a harsh response. The business and investment community may take care of that.

Taking what back? We were always demanding some bloody concession or another snyway. Britain leaving now may be the best thing that could happen for the eu project.

The Brex@#(!ters think they have arrived at a terminus. In reality it is merely a stop along the way. The young are coming, 18 - 30s largely voted to remain, inevitably the old will disappear from the electorate and whatever is left of the UK will be back to beg its way in. Sans all of its opt outs of course.

I personally think that the EU needs the UK as well. There may be an understandable, popular feeling within Europe to make us pay for our treachery, but remember at least 48 % voted to stay and we will be the core that inevitably drags the mouth breathers back to the table. The core of Europe on the other hand has shifted away from the gravitational pull that the UK exerted on it. There are tradionally less socialist countries whose voice was heard with one of the bigger economies shouting with them. Now Britain sails away with far too much Ying and leaves Europe with a surfeit of Yang.

The UK saves Europe once again! A free trade agreement and thank you very much. The EU needed waking from it's stupor. The Eurozone is $#@!ed, the people are not happy, and democracy is back in fashion baby. Happy days.

[quote name='pkk' post='698183' date='Jun 24 2016, 01:28 PM']It's always easier to blame someone else (EU), instead of admiting the you did something wrong (thatcherism).
