I did cut it down a little for the tl;dr crowd, but i actually think its a mix of the two. If i had to lean one way, i would definitely lean towards Huxley though. Inflicting pleasure definitely seems to be the most effective way to control a population, but there are still many authoritarian elements and a healthy dose of propaganda that pushes the slider a bit back towards the center in between the two.
EDIT: i do remember being pissed off at the ending of Huxley's book though.

I think this is just Obama trying to earn his peace prize...

Yup here's an explanation for you.girlyboy wrote:QUOTE (girlyboy @ Oct 1 2011, 05:32 AM) The US military only kills people who aren't nice?
Apart from the legal rights or not, I am not an American.
What worries me is how easy it it to kill someone. In the old times you have to knife or shoot someone, poison or chop his head of. I suppose it takes some guts to knife someone and see him dying before your eyes. It makes the killing hard, and the number of kills low. Try knifing 20 people. Not that easy.
Nowadays some guy sits comfortable in an chair far away from the battle zone, uses a joystick and an computer to let a remote controlled plane kill someone. No risk. You don't even see the person, just a YaHOOOO after a big explosion. Just as easy to blow up a Garr in Alleg.
Convenient. The President sends an email from his smartphone, and 10 minutes later, BEEP BEEP, "tango down sir". Reply: letter of commendation, "well done son".

US Citizen? Assassination? Strange terms for a guy who is a leader in an organization that is currently waging war against the US.germloucks wrote:QUOTE (germloucks @ Sep 30 2011, 08:51 PM) $#@! you obama/bush and your roughshod trampling of constitutional privileges. Im so sick and tired of you dickbags doing essentially whatever you want and NOONE can hold you accountable!
Anwar Awlaki was a liar, a murderer, and a scumbag. But his ass was BORN in Arizona... and that means you cant just order a drone strike to take him out without him having a chance to defend himself. Those are the principles that millions of us have fought and died for, and you just @#(! all over those sacrifices.
$#@! you
Oh, and you're welcome.

indeed. what we should do is just ask all the guys who do things like fly planes into buildings filled with civilians to just sit around a table and talk about their issues with us. I'm sure they'll be willing to do that if we are.

Killing isnt wrong, we all contribute in one way or another. Its culture and human nature to kill, its been going since the dawn of man and will continue, so get used to it.k10xbai wrote:QUOTE (k10xbai @ Oct 1 2011, 12:57 PM) Killing is wrong
The difference is killing for the right or wrong reasons, its not my call to decide that factor in foreign office.
However from an ethical and moral standpoint, this chump was blown up so to save lives, his life for many, when he put himself in this situation is completely justifiable to me.
People die and are murdered for far less glorious reasons, some without any point at all....
Putin Jail is also where every freedom-loving American will end up if you don't kill more people for your freedoms! You want the Russians to win, huh, you commie?k10xbai wrote:QUOTE (k10xbai @ Oct 1 2011, 08:06 AM) putinjail
"US Citizen"? A strange term! Can we really know what a US Citizen is? It's one of those weird philosophical words that you have to analyse and what-not. Like beauty, it's in the eyes of the beholder. Sure, it'd be nice if we lived in a simple world where there was, like, a sheet of paper or something that told you who was and who wasn't a "US Citizen," but reality isn't so easy, man! And "Assassination?" Is it really an "assassination" if the target was someone bad? Assassination is such an ugly word! We should use pretty words when we want to assassinate someone who really had it coming.TakingArms wrote:QUOTE (TakingArms @ Oct 1 2011, 07:52 AM) US Citizen? Assassination? TakingArms was flying those drones personally! Possibly while wearing a cowboy hat. Yehaww!TakingArms wrote:QUOTE (TakingArms @ Oct 1 2011, 07:52 AM) Oh, and you're welcome.
Again, I just think this should be treated like a morally ambiguous issue, rather than "whee, our guvmin't kills evil people, we should be happy!"
