Apparently the old saying "Takes one to know one" doesn't apply in the Canadian backwoods

How is something arbitrary like degrees better than something that is based on a mathematical relationship?Terran wrote:QUOTE (Terran @ Nov 7 2010, 07:21 PM) we are both right, i was thinking in degrees while you were thinking in radians. radians are theoretical and stupid, degrees make sense in the real world... i win.

something that has meaning in real life is way more useful than something that is theoretical. theoretical correctness is meaningless when you can only achieve certain accuracies. just like say being able to integrate a complicated fuction theoretically is such a meaningless skill when you can apply simple approximations to achieve similar enough results.

Personally, I prefer to use radians. The only time I use degrees is if I have to measure an angle when building something. So far, I have yet to need to measure an angle accurately enough when building stuff that actually doing trig would make a difference in whatever it was I built.Terran wrote:QUOTE (Terran @ Nov 7 2010, 07:21 PM) we are both right, i was thinking in degrees while you were thinking in radians. radians are theoretical and stupid, degrees make sense in the real world... i win.
the only reason that degree's has any perceived meaning in real life is that it the the system that most people are trained to think withTerran wrote:QUOTE (Terran @ Nov 7 2010, 07:48 PM) something that has meaning in real life is way more useful than something that is theoretical. theoretical correctness is meaningless when you can only achieve certain accuracies. just like say being able to integrate a complicated function theoretically is such a meaningless skill when you can apply simple approximations to achieve similar enough results.
(such as people thinking in base10 and in their native language)
if we taught radians first this wouldn't be an issue at all
(any idiot child could accept pi/2 being a right angle just as easily as they could accept 90 degree's)
