Well the cleanup deleted pretty much everything, then I deleted everything else.

Still can't connect with ASGS, still can't connect with windows update, still can't install NET 2.0, still can't uninstall NET 2.0. Man...

I did the SFC scan thing, and it informed me that it couldn't repair some of the files. But when I tried to view the SFC log it denied me permission. I was running command prompt as an administrator. If it did repair some files, it has seemingly changed nothing.

Also there were a few mentions of copying files from the Vista install DVD, but I don't have one of those.

Um, you don't have an OS DVD... does this mean your OS is, errr... alternatively legal...? That would explain your problems with getting updates...

Might be on a disk image from the computer supplier.

Haha, no it just came with the computer. I didn't get a disk for it.

I didn't consider there being an image of it though, do you know where I would find it?

Heh, sometimes (rarely lately, thank God) vendors provide a hidden partition containing the installation files for the OS, drivers and stuff like that. You'd have to read your manual on how to use the contents of such partition to repair your system. This sort of solution sucks for various reasons, one is the issue you've just encountered.
Sadly, I can't walk you through the process, as those vary wildly depending on make and model of your machine :(

Another solution that might work is just downloading an image of a DVD containing such an OS, burning and using that... not sure though and you might end up with a 4 GB useless download.
Just try to figure out the hidden partition stuff for now. If you can't find the manual, there usually are downloadable versions of them on vendors' sites.

I'll definitely look into that. I don't mind torrenting anything. I wind up with GBs of useless downloads all the time, so I'm used to it.

Right now though I thought I'd mention that somehow windows update just sort of, updated. Apparently somewhere along the road I managed to fix something enough that the automatic update worked. However, ASGS is responding exactly the same.

Hmmmm, another thought just pop up in my head: go to your router's settings and look for an option called 'Allow UPnP' or something like that. Toggle it (if it was on, turn it off, if it was off, turn it on), reboot router and try again.

Sorry for my absence, went away for a long weekend.

How do I change my router settings? Will I need my router's password?
