this is all pointless.

We've had bad/apples, good /apples lecturing before.

Vets taunting the noobs, i had when i was a 5, so Adept has a point here imho, not sure you'd call them voobs then.

I've put myself to shame recently, @#(! happens, so did part of that "vets smack on voobs" welcome, and tough love (aka net crap for you real people)

peace and good riddance for what i care.

Alleg is perfect to blow up steam? Only if you've got the skills to, otherwise...you just build more. I believe someone put in the perfect line in some earlier thread:

"If you don't like it, then don't play it". Good truth. Time to stick to it.

Besides. Alleg IS a tiny, private circle, with a dedicated community.
It looks like the community itself wants to expand. Good thing. Best of luck.

The best analogy I can come up with is this: The community is a group of older guys who are letting someone's little cousin hang with them. If the little cousin doesn't get he should stfu and follow along then the group hazes him unmercifully. Sometimes the little cousin leaves, sometimes he wises up, and sometimes he becomes a maladjusted pyromanic.

There tends to be a fair amount early on of love for new guys, but pretty quickly the love becomes "tough love" and its *boom headshot* time if you act up. I agree that we tend to be pretty $#@!ing civilized compared to say XBox Live but we are shrinking with many of the old timers barely hangin in there. Maybe its a cycle, how do I actually know. Given the depth and length of the decline maybe we should reopen the discussion.

Using the leaderboard oveer the last nine months as the baseline you find some interesting things. The results are only directional correct tbs but telling. Around 75% of the new player stay less then five games that count. We retain a dismal percent more then ten games about 5% iirc. Now if there where a ton of activity on the newb servers Id be inclined to poo poo that number but I think it is fairly accurate. Why? Probably its a combo of wtf is going on, and the treatment they observe in game? I really don't know. I am concerned about things.

Why are we losing people faster then we are replacing them? Maybe because guys like me lambast people like SharpFish PUBLICLY for something that pisses me off. In game, rude, nasty, and going for the throat. Its become standard operating procedure to deal with people who are not onboard the clue train to bash them. Both here and in game. A good portion of us our doing it.

To call out Hermit for time served is ludicrous the guy knows the game, cares about the game, is a valued member of the squad, he just isnt as vocal as some of us. So when he finally speaks his opinion a number of people attack him. If you disagree  but he has put in time enough for you to make your own sandwich on this one.

It is the internet so I guess Im dreaming but maybe something can come of this discussion.

This is probably the least childish forum I've ever been a part of, most forums are sprawls of hostility where anyone who posts is immediately accused of trolling, gets flamed, has things implied about his mother, has a few lame memes chucked at him giving everyone a mirthless chuckle and it continues until the person who dared to post has been completely destroyed.

I admit writing the post was probably ill adviced. I'm just not cynical enough to go directly to rants and yell at people.

Oh well. Back to business as usual. At least it's SG night so there is some soothing violence to be had later today. :P

any posts that require sandwiches should end a thread :)

my 2 cents, Allegiance develops the 'fighter-jock' mentality, can't be help.

For perspective the trash talking and noob bashing is very minor point now compare to years back. I haven't seen anyone abuse a noob, most I have seen is people helping out unless the noob is a total asshat :D

That being said a friendly reminder to the community isn't a bad thing :) but it may be a bit of preaching to the converted :D

Cheers

I don't see why everybody is reacting so harshly to what is essentially a good intentioned post by Adept. It seems like some kind of past argument or bad blood was continued over into this thread.

People have mentioned here that they haven't seen vets taunting or maligning new players here, only voobs or other noobs. Maybe Adept was trying to speak to those who do instead of all the "vets" who are taking offense and posting negatively.

I also see that many people are comparing Allegiance to other popular video games that would not be affected by dozens of people a month (or even per day) leaving their game. In this game though, I think having the majority of people who sign up eventually leave sooner then later has a lasting impact on the growth of the game.

I will say that I don't put much stock in the whole forum thing. While I would love to see less "Whatever noob, learn to get a thicker skin" comments from people, if said newbs have been on the internet at all they would know that forum experiences tend to vary. That having been said, I have seen several instances these past few years of intolerance showed towards newbs in game. I'm not talking isolated incidents of ritalin overdosed 12 year olds being slapped down for being tards either.

Do I have logs? No I don't keep logs at all because I don't care to argue on the forums, but i'm not overstating the situation.

Clay_Pigeon wrote:QUOTE (Clay_Pigeon @ Jan 17 2010, 01:36 AM) The majority of taunting that I see consists of spidey taunting nuke.
Care to explain the contradiction Clay :)

And yes Pico, for whatever reason there are plenty of people here who have decided that Adept cannot possibly be right regardless of whether he's talking sense or not (I personally put that at a 50:50 ratio). None so deaf as those who don't want to hear.

Irrespective of ingame shenanigans it'd be nice if everyone tried extra hard to be supportive of new players over the next few months whilst we try and grow the game. We don't want to miss the next Weed after all.

On that note, may I also suggest that enforcement pass on the names of suspicious newbies for scanning, instead of preemptively banning them.
