I just hope we hear from GameSpy soon. The email also included some emails between GS employees discussing our request (intentionally or not? I dunno) but it said "we can give them the Q&R SDK" so I'm expecting to get at least that, if not an actual GS ID to report back to master servers (which also sounded promising)

another update.
More correspondence with gamespy, we will get the SDK. Now we wait on them to give it to us.

Gamespy (or as imago calls them, GaySpy) won't return my emails now. No idea. I've berated, belittled and played nice (not in that order) to no avail. I'm going to make one final attempt and say screw it if they don't reply.

finalized response from GameSpy:
"I’ve been advised to say we’re going to pass."
when i asked why:
"Basically, there is no return for us licensing our tech and providing developer support since this is a free game. For any Indie style opportunity, we require it be sold digitally on Direct2Drive to us our tech free. We would do a rev share to re-coup costs."
when i asked if they could release SDK only without support or any monetary cost on their side:
"I wish it was that easy, but we don’t allow our SDKs to be released w/o being put through our QA/Cert process to make sure it is working properly."
no go.

Someone could always built support in for some basic query functions on their own . . if they were so inclined.
But . .I would certainly want some hard assurances from a provider or two that they would then run our server before putting that kind of work into it.
I'll talk to the AU guys again and see what he thinks and see if I can talk to marketing about a plan for AU players.

I propose to ask him for an example of a gamespy-free solution. (maybe writing the # of players+asgs list into a file every xy seconds would be enough for him.)
edit: I was tired and I didn't read more than the last 2 posts. Now I did.;-)
