"South of the Alps and East of the Adriatic, paranoia is considered mental equilibrium..."

I started playing Allegiance in the past week after reading about it on the PA forums. Thoughts so far...
-Really fun game!
-I do waaaaaay better, and have more fun, when the commander gives me something specific to do. I especially don't have a good feel for what goes on as the game progresses, once we control a couple sectors, so getting orders concerning what to do and where to be is really really useful.
-I often see "protect con", "nan bbr", or something along those lines, and while I understand the abbreviations I usually have NO idea what sector the thing I'm supposed to be protecting/repairing/escorting is actually in. "Nan Sup", for example, is useless when I have no idea what sector the Sup is in. That might be useful info to add to some of the frantic commands. When someone gives me a time frame, it also helps a ton - "bbr run in 2 minutes", for example.
-Loading up probes and scouting at the start of the game seems to be a good thing. Telling everyone what sector I'm going to probe is also good.
-I have no idea how to kill gunships effectively.
-Picking up friendly pods is really helpful. Getting picked up is very nice as well. Ramming with your pod is totally sweet, flying fast through minefields to get yourself podded is also good stuff.
-Protecting miners is hard. Keeping track of a bomber under fire while trying to nan it is even harder.
-Don't chase scouts at high speed, unless I'm really close. Stupid mines.

That's where knowing the minimap icons become handy /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> On the minimap, when you put your mouse on top of a sector it usually shows what's in there. Let's say it's tech base: you'll see a station icon with a letter on top of it. For a sup, you should see the letter S on a station icon. Of course this is different for every core, but for DN, the core we mostly play on, it's pretty simple to figure out.
Well with the "nan bbr", you can see the small dots beside each sector on your minimap showing how many ship/stations are in the sector. When looking for bbr you want to look for the sector with most dots. Most of the time, you won't be the only one nanning so there should be a group of people in that sector and that's prettymuch the sector you should be in. Of course, it won't work all the time so make sure you still check the icon to see if there is, ineed a bomber in that sector.
for the rest, I think @cadet's a pretty good idea /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
edit: oops i forgot academy link for icons

I must say Eltravar, you have a very good grasp of the game so far, keep it up!
As for killing gunships... well that's been a problem quite a lot recently. Teamwork always helps... remember there's three of them so expect to need a tleast 3 of you working together to kill it. Stealth fighters are good at killing them too.

Usually good commanders will give out orders. When you get some experience you will get a feeling of what needs to be done. When you get even more experience you will begin second guessing the other team and what they are doing. Few things are more sweet than thinking "I think they are pushing a con high where we have no probes", go there and manage to stop the constructor /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />Eltravar wrote:QUOTE (Eltravar @ May 17 2007, 04:26 AM) -I do waaaaaay better, and have more fun, when the commander gives me something specific to do. Probes are usually good, early in the game. Loadouts are a very personal thing.Eltravar wrote:QUOTE (Eltravar @ May 17 2007, 04:26 AM) -Loading up probes and scouting at the start of the game seems to be a good thing. Telling everyone what sector I'm going to probe is also good.
Taking on a gunship is roughly the same thing as taking on 3 players in strong combat ships. You don't do it alone. The easiest ways is to gang up with 2-3 ints and get in nice and close.Eltravar wrote:QUOTE (Eltravar @ May 17 2007, 04:26 AM) -I have no idea how to kill gunships effectively.
Many games are lost due to having the team floating in pods with no pickups. Never leave pods floating.Eltravar wrote:QUOTE (Eltravar @ May 17 2007, 04:26 AM) -Picking up friendly pods is really helpful. Getting picked up is very nice as well. Yep. After a while you will get a sense of where people and how they are moving. The trick is usually to stay close enough to save the thing you are protecting, but far away not to make you an easy target.Eltravar wrote:QUOTE (Eltravar @ May 17 2007, 04:26 AM) -Protecting miners is hard. Do chase scouts! How else am I to get any kills?!?Eltravar wrote:QUOTE (Eltravar @ May 17 2007, 04:26 AM) -Don't chase scouts at high speed, unless I'm really close. Stupid mines.
(Oh, if it hasn't been mentioned before. Join cadet. We have a huge lot of information for you! /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> )
