*Is stunned and gives up on a few years worth of writing*

I never knew such a series existed... I've been writing something along the lines of this as both a game and fictional work. That certainly put a dampner on things while at the same time supplying me with a new series to read :/ More time for Alleg now I guess...

Well, Croc, that sort of stuff is actually pretty common. Can't remember the name of the book, but it's one where aliens transform Neptune for a new race. Also, 2001: A Space Oddesy (And it's sequels) have this. Larry Niven touches on it occasionally - The backstory of the Kzinti is like that (Except now they use those that brought them to the spacefaring level as a food source), and he has mentioned this happening to the dolphins as well. And there's the whole 'Stargate' universe where the Ancients created humanity, and also where the Goa'uld have (although not to the same degree) done it with the Jaffa

"Code of the Lifemaker"?

Usually though, "skill" is used to covertly mean "match the game exactly to my level of competence." Anyone who is at all worse than me should fail utterly (and humorously!) and anyone better is clearly too caught up in the game and their opinions shouldn't count.

On one hand, there is a significant part of me that enjoys watching this individual ignore lots of REALLY good advice and slit his own throat in a particularly spectacular way.

On the other hand, I just have a hard time watching people make total asses of themselves. Call it sympathy or empathy, but about 30 seconds in a part of me screams "OH GOD! PLEASE MAKE IT STOP!"

Clay, do you need a huggles with love?

I've been drilling through Nivens work, and I would suggest the following reading for you:
Protector
(man/kzinti wars in here somewhere)
Ringworld
Ringworld Engineers
Ringworld Throne

I stumbled across his book "mote in gods eye" a long time ago, and never realized it was him until i picked up ringworld, since then, I've been raiding my local used book stores to fill out my collection

There's a sequel to "Mote in God's Eye" as well.

The Man-Kzin Wars are a good series of books. I've read Ringworld and Ringworld Engineers, not sure about Ringworld Throne. Pretty sure I haven't read Protector.

There's also the various books by Niven about the colonies before mankind gets the hyperdrive. Can't remember the name of them either
