Is anybody actually playing Star Citicen?

Some SC backers hate the game on instinct, now that I think about it. Maybe that is the reason.

If so, I'd love to hear _Star_Citizen_ impressions from him.

I've backed neither, nor do I have any intention of doing so.

I've bought the Elite preorder pack mostly because of the one man advertising campaign that is Adept.

Maybe it's because there isn't someone promoting SC in a similar way to me but Elite looks far more like what I want than SC. Privateer was alright but I always felt hemmed in and the combat wasn't exciting to me. As a devotee of the X Wing games it felt flat in a 2D kind of way.

Elite I played as a kid and loved. Frontier and FFE didn't quite achieve the same highs for me so I'm hoping for something like a much deeper version of the original Elite.

I just hope I have time to play it :)

http://www.incgamers.com/2014/10/star-citi...o-fly-this-week

If you guys want to see what Arena Commander is like, you can fly all the ships for free this week.

The M50 and Hornet are the ones with all gimbaled guns, so you can fly them with a mouse in Freelancer style. Everything else is more or less borked still.

I'll quote a Rear Admiral level backer from the SC forums.

QUOTE Well, I've resigned myself to the fact that CIG is concentrating on the Hollywood-esque "rule of cool", and going for more of a Freelancer HD game rather than doing something truly groundbreaking in anything other than polygon count. This would require putting some thought into how the ships/world work in a scientific way though, which isn't really compatible with the aesthetic they're going for. S ship that would topple over is a minor thing compared to the shrunken planets, nebula fog, lack of any visible space to hold fuel, etc.

I just hope they can sort out the flight model (which to be honest has improved a bit with the latest patch), and the dogfighting (which is still very poor). Those are fundamental to a space game, and if they don't work right the whole game falls apart.[/quote]

No, more fool me

Instead they have gotten quite a bit of money from me, including two vanity ship skins. I pirated the original when I was a kid (10 or 11 ), so I rather felt I owed it.

Everyone currently playing the game is absolutely terrible and any given allegaince player who can be bothered will wipe the floor with the entire playerbase at the moment. Everyone is jousting.

A freind of mine has set up his oculus rift as a trackIR with better sensors (he wears it like a hat) and is currently has a 20 to 1 kill death ratio, once you factor out that any disconnect is counted as a death and the game crashes all the time.

I actually prefer star citizens flight model to elites, even if the numbers are completely messed up as it doesnt have a ridiculous half arsed planes in space feel.

What I hate about both is that there are gimballed weapons, it forces people into either headtracking (like my friend) or to use a joystick and a mouse, or two mice.

I assume your friend had an M50 or a Hornet. Ships with non gimbaled guns are just cannon fodder.

Elite's flight model has nothing half arsed btw. The fligt model is really well tuned, and was the design goal from the start. Yhe result is a much higher skill ceiling, where you actually have to plan ahead, not just spin your guns towards the enemy. It's fully 6DoF too, where SC still doesn't allow reverse thrust in all modes.

***

The comment about gimbals is not true for Elite. You don't control them directly with a mouse, they track a locked target with imperfect automated tracking.
