This was an anonymous submission:
QUOTE WASD - up-left-down-right thruster
RF - forward/back thruster
QE - roll
Ctrl + Q - rip
Ctrl + R - reload
Ctrl + D - dump cargo (control - Dump)
Ctrl + S - swap cargo (control - Swap)
C - chaff
V - Deploy
Right Mouse Button - target centre
Space bar - launch missile
You can map Ctrl + R/F for thruster adjustment (you need fine control to drop prox, you only need to adjust actual thrust once every while, or hardly at all to be accurate).
I don't know a good button for mouse control, I tend to just use any of the F-keys that bring up the menu to get mouse available to me.[/quote]
The one that's on beta at the moment uses W up S down. The problem I had with that was that I launched with it without knowing anything about it, and by the time I hit the sector boundary I still hadn't figured out the throttle controls (so I couldn't stop or go backwards), nor the toggle mouse button (so I couldn't turn around).
The release date is 'When it comes out.' Soon, I hope. We'll have another beta test after the latest changes go online. At one point Imago made it possible to store inputmaps on a cloud, but it was removed for a few reasons (he used a third party server to store them, most people only play from one machine anyway, and others).
I was never in SF. BS->ACE->MEC.

I always use ESDF in games to get the extra vertical QAZ row of keys to use with pinky, plus F has the little knob so it's very easy to find with your hand.
I have backwards thruster mapped for very easy access, it's one of the most useful thrusters in any dogfight situation, trust me!
If I were to relearn anything in my bindings it would be to switch thruster and roll, to make it a bit easier to fly rix ships, I can't roll and sidethrust at the same time with my binding, but it's usually not a very big problem.
ESDF - thrusters
A - backwards thruster
SHIFT-SF - roll
SPACE - booster
WR - throttle
SHIFT-WR - zoom
Z - reload
G - drop mine
Q - nearest enemy
X - target center
CTRL-Q - nearest eney base
CTRL-S - friendly miner
SHIFT-B - friendly base
+ some other random target bindings which i don't use that often

thrust - wasd
roll - qe
thrust foward/back - alt-w alt-s
speep up/down - t/space
drop mine/probe - z
drop chaft - v
target nearest enemy - x
target center - c
Everything else is the default one I believe...
Talking about controls, I believe this should be stick to the most basic ones, leaving the fining tune to each player after sometime so they can configure them in a more suitable way.
Also, some ppl do use joysticks, so I guess having 2 presets, wouldnt hurt.

W/S should be forward/reverse thrust, definitely. Any FPS player will come in ready to aim themselves with mouse and move themselves with WASD. If they hit W on their first launch and they go up instead of forward, they gon' be confused.
That said, up and down are essential. I use Q and E for down/up, but I'm the first to admit that's a little weird. R and F might be better (that was in someone else's map somewhere). I also use shift-A and shift-D for rolling. Q and E might be better. The aforementioned can't roll and thrust at the same time problem for rix.
I started playing recently, and the very first change I made was to make WASD forward-left-back-right thrusters.
All the rest - as long as all the core functions are handy, anyone can get used to different configurations. It doesn't matter.

Just out of curiosity, how do you thrust up-right with that keyboard config?BlackBagel wrote:QUOTE (BlackBagel @ Dec 9 2013, 02:06 AM) W/S should be forward/reverse thrust, definitely. WASD is standard forward, left, backward, right, in games. That's what the purpose of a new default keymap is - so it's more standardized and less retarded.
I use Q and E for up and down and Z and C for rolling. R and F for up and down might be better.

I will put up my keymapping if anyone is interesting in grabbing ideas. so far it has worked perfectly for me most of the time with high response. the problem would be when many things has to be done at almost the same time like when you are in a stealth fighter and you have to quickly unmount missile and cloack almost at the same time.. other than that works well and easy for most ships:
MOVEMENT
THRUSTERS
Left - A and SHiFT+A
Right - D and SHIFT+D
Down - S and SHIFT+S
Up - W and SHIFT+W
Forward - Right Mouse Button.
Backward - Spacebar
Speed UP - Wheel mouse UP
Speed Down - Wheel mouse Down
OTHER
Roll Left - Q and SHIFT+Q
Roll Right - E and SHIFT+E
Booster - TAB
Autopilot - Middle Mouse Button (helps a lot to have it very close for fast aiming when exiting aleph)
Cloack - Control+Spacebar (Sometimes when smashing other keys it does not register, problem for Stealth ships)
WEAPONS
Fire guns - Left Mouse button (Typical)
Fire Missile - SHIFT+Spacebar
Drop Chaff - Z and SHIFT+Z
Drop Probe/Mines - X and SHIFT+X
Reload - Control + R
CARGO
Change cargo - -
Drop Cargo - SHIFT+-
TARGETTING
Target Center - C and SHIFT+C
Target Enemy - F and SHIFT+F Friendly - T and SHIFT+T
Target enemy Bomber - NUMPAD7 Friendly - NUMPAD9
Target enemy Miner - NUMPAD4 Friendly - NUMPAD6
Target enemy Constructor - NUMPAD1 Friendly - NUMPAD 3
Target Enemy Lifepod - NUMPAD5 Friendly - NUMPAD 2
i think this covers pretty much my settings and i find them very viable..forward thrust with right mouse button prevents keys blocking eachother when using hvy int and boosting+firiing+forward thrust for speed+wasd for dodge..same with fighters kinda)
(AND Someone told me that needing to press 2 buttons on the mouse (forward + shoot) threatens aiming, with a relaxed hand that does not happen)
well.. your thoughts? i hope someone finds it usefull
