Turkey,

You need to look at the opportunity cost of having a full combat load that could kill a miner or waste incoming enemy scouts or fighters, therefore saving your own drone/miner vs deploying a few probes, at a stage in the game where there should be a lot of eyes around the map due to the team spreading out anyway.

Now... is it a good idea for a noob who cannot use missiles or mines effectively to carry them? No. So yes, I'm making that assumption there.

You must have a nan in cargo however regardless of whether you are escorting anything or not. It gives you far more flexibility in reacting to emergency situations.

I really think that we shouldn't ask noobs to probe so much- probing is boring and I believe it causes many to leave

Plus they typically don't do it very well (probing friendly sectors, probing useless sectors, probing in a straight line, probing in easy-to-spot places, probes that don't eye anything, the list goes on).

I like how Fwiffo does it: put them to work killing miners on day 1.

You guys want to talk bragging rights over whose advice you should listen to?

Listen to the guy who wrote the wiki.

Q1. Don't get podded. Find their second wave of cons and keep your eyes on them. Find their miners and keep your eyes on them. Find friendly teammates and help them (nan them, or watch them ram a rock then pick up their pod, act as eyes for them).

Q2. If it's a choice between miner or con, I would say: protect the miner if it is full, otherwise protect the con. If you're asking which one should you escort: Escort cons if they're going somewhere and no one else is already there/ahead of them. Escort miners if you expect them to come under attack soon (enemy outpost is near your mining sector, and/or they have aggro veterans).

Q3. Depends on how far the green door is and how much attack the con/miner is under. I like to dock, swap one or two probes for prox, and then head straight out. It saves me time in the loadout screen, and doesn't weigh my scout down with too much prox so it saves me time on accelerating.

You want to know where to probe? I can tell you right now, and the game hasn't even started yet.

9, 11, 12 or 7. All of them, eventually, but you'll only have enough probes for at most two sectors.

Yes if you have a miner O loadout then you'll probably need cargo that aren't probes - but you'll probably also have a bunch of pals with you, so you can afford to deploy a few probes en route. If you're on con D then you'll need to sacrifice probe space to fit some prox, sure. But if the guy wants to probe, let him!
