get an ipad.
If budget isn't a problem then I think the best HTC phone out on the market is or in the very near future will be the HTC Sensation (dunno what the release schedule is over there, but over here it's like next month).
It has android and sense 3.0, plan on getting it myself when my contract is up in a couple of months unless I can find anything better.
Samsung Galaxy 2 is worth a look I guess, but I really like how HTC Sense 3.0 looks.

I've set up a blackberry or two and worked with a few others and I must say i hate their guts and hope their children are infertile. Bleh. Droid was pretty much the only other phone i knew of besides the iphone so I will definitely look at that
As a former windows mobile afficionado, I'd say skip that.
It's almost as locked down as an iPhone on the OS level except there are fewer people trying to jailbreak it.
I'm going to add to the droid opinion even though I've never owned one. I've worked with a few and even helped a few friends out with them but my cell phone is still just a @#(!ty kyocera pre-pay that I never use and can replace easily.
It's good for all my clandestine activities.

Question can you make calls from an Ipad? Would look kinda weird talking on a book sized tablet.

i have a lg optimus s. It's the cheapest phone that runs droid. I am quite impressed by it, although in terms of speed its not as good as some, and the screen is a bit smaller than some. But I got it free with a 2 year contract.

To T-Mobile's credit, the Galaxy S actually is Top-Tier android material, so I guess rather than having a bunch of different ones, they just said to themselves 'don't $#@! around, just get the good one'.
Having said that, smartphones suck battery like a mother$#@!er if you have all the radios on, so I reccomend picking a screen of your 'desktop' and having it filled with radio toggle widgets, so you can turn off the ones you're not using at the time and save some battery. That, combined with my XL battery means that when I'm conserving (read: using it just as a phone) it'll last for days like my old phone did. When you're watching Netflix or some @#(! on it, expect to suck down battery in a matter of hours though.

If you actually read mine I said the G2 is good (they might not have it anymore but I've only had mine for a few months). Best hardware keyboard I've ever used. There's a slight problem with the springs holding it down for some but I don't have a problem with it.

Yeah my toggle widget is on the front page and bluetooth/GPS is almost always off. I used to have a bluetooth headset but I don't have much reason for one anymore.
