There are better and simpler solutions than that, including hooking a different captcha generator. reCaptcha is too easy for bots.

Could we just put a password on the whole forum (like rants has)?
I doubt the people using the bots could be bothered to modify their bots to enter a password of "I am human" to get into our forums - we're not valuable enough.

No idea how difficult any of this is to implement - these sort of fixes fix the problems on other forums - if someone could google search some appropriate IPB forum mods - it would be even easier.

It works for rants so it should be easy (altough it might be a lot of work and very annoying for users).

I thought it wouldn't be so bad because I've only ever had to put in the rants password once for every computer I've used for the forums. It would be another hurdle for new members getting on the forums, but as long as the password is on the same page as the password box I imagine it would be fine.
