I asked if I could leave work an hours earlier on Thursday (and work an hour later on the Wednesday) to go to some Italian classes and I was turned down
Strange really as my company are quite good with HR things normally. If I ask to leave 30 minutes early on a Friday now and then to catch a train, they're fine with that. I guess it was the formal changing of my times they had issues with.

This is one of the rare cases I advocate lying.
I see no good coming from saying you want to take time off on a monday morning to play a video game.
If you are looking for good lies I could help you but I just don't see any old school boss letting you take time off for such a reason.

Agreed. Lying is pretty much your only viable option.
