A quick peek at the stats database tells me that 16682 distinct players (give or take the odd account linking hiccup) have played in the last two years. That's up from ~7000 this time last year iirc.

By games played in the last two years:

>100 games: 1125
50 - 100 games: 751
25 - 49 games: 1346
10 - 24 games: 2575
<10 games: 10782

Appx new accounts by year:

2007: 8684
2006: 5225
2005: 1849
2004: 546

Note: The data becomes a little sketchy before Pook began collecting stats for Elo. There may well have been more players, but these is no way for me to ascertain their existence. The 2006 and 2007 figures are accurate.

Usually though, "skill" is used to covertly mean "match the game exactly to my level of competence." Anyone who is at all worse than me should fail utterly (and humorously!) and anyone better is clearly too caught up in the game and their opinions shouldn't count.

As an @Alleg, I constantly drop into the newbie servers and try to talk to the new players to explain game basics. You would be surprised at how poor the response I get back is. Whether the new players are overwhelmed and lost or just don't want to communicate.
You can only offer the help new players must be willing to accept it.

I'm just a lowly cadet though. Still, at least I can honestly advertise the cadet program. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Puggle wrote:QUOTE (Puggle @ Nov 21 2007, 07:15 AM) I like to compare allegiance to another, similar free online teamplay oriented game that I played and loved for 5+ years. The leadership of that game held on to the code, made no development and alienated and actively purged its community (including amongst others, my squad that was the 'XT' of the game) into oblivion whereby there are regularly 0 players on, and 'Primetime' means a max of 10-15 players.

In stark contrast the leadership of Allegiance has done the right things to grow this community and this game. I'm a relative noob here, but in my 18 months or so I have noticed a big rise in new players.

Retention is always going to be a problem with such a complicated game. Don't forget that the modern video gaming experience is for short bursts of relatively simple gameplay, just blasting stuff on your Xbox... What's the longevity of the average video game before kids get bored? two months? Three? You can only just fly in Alleg after that period of time so naturally loads of newbs will get bored and go elsewhere.

Was that game Freespace by chance?

I applaud your insight and responses, sincerely. Now I'd like to give a small piece of advice and a challenge in return. From now until say errrm New Year's Day make an effort to once, say every five games or days which ever comes first actively try to help someone with a lower rank to learn the game while you are playing I'll do the same. I'm figuring you'll get a better insight another aspect of the issue. I'd rather not cloud your view with mine atm but I'll be happy to discuss and listen to your view later. If you'll agree to this I'll do it too.

No, don't follow Mr. Chaos' advice. I saw what newbs teach to other newbs, it is not funny.

Oh dear. I wonder what sort of stuff Wulfie has seen?

What I meant is stuff like "Hello, welcome to the game. You should probably change to the command wing so you'll see where our miners and constructors are going"

"If you want to respond in private, click on my name first"

"Don't let the complexity get you down. This is the best game in the world. I recommend reading up on the academy files and looking up Cadet I"

***

I don't pretend to be an expert, but I think such contact is useful, and I try to ansver questions like "what is a nan?" and the like.

yeah yeah, but the thing is, ive said that damn thing so many times, i want to macro all this @#(! to save me typing.

we invented CDT for a reason, and i hope to continue supporting it as an instructor, but telling people to do things doesnt work as well as putting all the info out, or asking them what they need to know.

1 on 1 works the best, but its so time intensive that it prohibits it on a broad scale.

that being said, i feel that those i have taught learned well.
