Hi i'm new
Well, it's not really either. It's definitely not about mouse clicking. That happens a bit if you're the commander, but not nearly to the extent of other games. Blowing up people (and other targets) is only part of the game. Knowing which targets to blow up is key and you generally have to do so in a co-ordinated fashion. But there are plenty of important roles to play that don't involve blowing stuff up - like probing, for instance. Well placed probes give your team important intelligence on enemy movements. Games are lost due to the lack of probes. Nanning is another role - it's the opposite of blowing stuff up. With a nanite repair gun, you repair the hull of your team's ships so that they live longer and may achieve the current goal.scar! wrote:QUOTE (scar! @ Apr 7 2007, 12:26 PM) just a quick question, is this more of strategy clicking the mouse and stuff or more of blowing up other people? /mrgreen.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="mrgreen.gif" />
From the player's perspective, it's about situational awareness and communication. Knowing what role to play at the time, then switching to another role as circumstances warrant.
FreeBeer's post is definitely worth reading again. Many players fall into a niche - they find something they do well and do it each and every game. It's hard to try and divulge from something you do well, but in this game if you want to be a very good pilot you're going to need to learn many roles. If there's something you do extremely well you can do that to your team's best advantage, but you also need to sometimes do something you don't do extremely well if the team needs you to do that. Most of that awareness comes with experience, as it's hard to know what you should be doing when you don't have xxx games under your belt for reference.
Myself, I'm a pretty decent killer(whore) but I fancy myself pretty good at about everything... I try to whore as much as possible in a game, usually going after miners and constructors to hamper the enemy, or intercepting probe scouts in my sectors. But if I see a bomber coming for us with 5 nans and I only see 4 people in our sector to d, I'll stop what I'm doing and grab a scout and try to prox the aleph, or another ship if we already have a proxer, etc. If I see a 2-nan bomb run and 5 of our ships to d, I'll probably go about killing the miner I'm after or probing their home, or whatever my original mission was. I often find that I get caught up in having an uber ship and shooting things that I forget or don't realize what the team needs - i.e. maybe we have been constantly bombing another sector for the last 10 minutes and i've spent 7 of those racking up a 40 kb in the 'dogfight' sector for no reason. It's then that I realize I AM wasting time (albeit very fun) and I should be helping the team instead of mindlessly killing and getting killed with no specific objective.
As a relative newbie the best thing you can ever do is most likely to learn to nan, and probe, and PICK UP PODS. Picking up your team's pods is extremely essential, imagine if you have next to NO skills and you manage to pick up 4 extremely skilled pilots. You haven't done anything personally amazing, but if those 4 people manage to successfully defend your tech base, or bomb the enemy, or something like that, you can know that they probably did it because of YOU. So in that way, you make a huge impact. Personally I will pick up pods if possible, but I put more weight on picking up Weedman than Irox1994suka because I know that picking up Weed will benefit our team a lot more than (what was his name again?). But if it's not out of my way, and the newbie is actively working to get picked up(heading TOWARD my ship, or standing still) I'll generally pick him up too.
There is nothing more annoying than breaking your course to attempt a pod rescue for bobsuxalot72 and having him spam "Need a Pickup!" but yet continue to fly away from your ship. In allegiance the ship acceleration is not very good, so if you break course to turn or turn AROUND you lose a lot of time. I usually let people like that float, because it's quite simply not worth my time to pick up someone that is so retarded that they will probably accomplish nothing even IF I did pick them up and take 1.5 minutes off my mission.

I will train you young one. Bring me a filled keg, a carton of smokes, and as much pr0n as you can carry, and meet me at the dojo. Also, you earn extra credit for bringing women which exponentially grows based upon how many and how good they look.Jagnara wrote:QUOTE (Jagnara @ Apr 7 2007, 08:33 PM) hi! im late to post as usual!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! who will train me??
