QUOTE I was thinking that once a set of new VC had been decided on I could start a thread asking for submissions from anyone interested, and then conduct a poll for each VC to decide who's voice is most loved.
On that note, if I did run polls to determine whose voice to use for which VC, it would clutter up the forum something chronic. If I put 3 polls (the max) in each thread, thats already 10 seperate threads. Anyone have a problem with me cluttering up a forum like that (either here, or general I guess)? (This question is pretty much aimed at TE or any other board moderator)

Anyone want to suggest VC feel free, just like jgbaxter and TE have.

Attack Carrier
Defend Carrier
Escort Carrier forward
Attack tech base
Defend tech base

And I had an idea, a 'Tell a newbie' menu on the VC. The menu would have a short entry, the sound effect would be a short "Read the chat newbie" (friendly tone), but what came up in the chatbox would be a long explanation.
For instance
Tell a newbie
...about a nan (e).

"A nan is used to repair. When you are in base, press f4 and select a scout. Load a nan in cargo. Now when you are flying around, you can press ctrl-1 to swap your main gun for the nan. Shoot it at friends to repair them."

... how to probe (u)
"Probing is essential to see the enemy. When you are in base, press f4 and select a scout. Fill the cargo with probes. Press f7 to bring up the minimap and find the enemy's sectors - they will be circles coloured their teams colour. Make your way to one of them and start dropping the probes near enemy flight paths."

... about the academy
... about the cadet course
... about the GT scout
... about money
... about nanning nix
... about pressing page up to read all this useful information

thoughts?

Thats too much for the quick chat menu. That would be best for a pod radio if anyone ever does that and/or build it into a training mission. You can just have newbs read the help menu.

I for one can live with the clutter for a new vc pack, possibly even an official pack (which could be officialized with a community/senate vote perhaps). /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

The newbie ones would be too long, imagine that madness that would insue when someone like TopGun started to spam them :(

Okay, heres what I got:

Main menuMoved: ~3, "Shhhooot!"
Moved to ~Y5
Replacement: "Call drop" (new)Moved: ~7, "Donate your money to the investor"
Moved to ~OD
Replacement: "Drop" (new)I felt that 'Call drop' and 'drop' are quite urgent VC, and hence should be in the top layer of menus. Wheras 'Shoot' and 'donate' just didn't make the cut, and have been moved to submenus more fitting to their use.

Attack... (A)New: ~ak, "Attack carrier"
Decided to adopt k as the common key for carrier, since it is unused and right next to l, the capital ship key.New: ~az, "Attack techbase"
Chose z to bring it in line with ~cz, "pickup tech".Defend... (D)New: ~dk, "Defend carrier"New: ~dz, "Defend techbase"Commands... ©New: ~c1, "Stop ramming me".
Seemed to be the best place to put itFind... (F)
No changes

General... (G)
No changes

Need... (N)Moved: ~ne, "Need better fighters"
Moved to ~n1
Replacement: "Need nanites." (new)
Adopting 'e' as the common key for 'nanites'.Moved: ~nk, "Need rescue probe!"
Moved to ~n2
Replacement: "Need carrier" (new)
Adopting 'k' as the common key for 'carrier'.New: ~n0, "Need escort"Respond... ®
No changes

Taunts... (T)
No changes

Yell... (Y)Moved: ~yf, "I've found their base."
Moved to ~y6
Replacement: "Turrets stop firing!" (new)"New": ~y5, "Shhhooot!"
Was moved from Main menuNew: ~y0, "sf on our miners NOW!"Info... (I)"New": ~ib, "Is our base clear?"
Was moved from Other menuNew: ~ic, "It's clear"New: ~ig, "We got this camped"New: ~ir, "I'm fully recharged"New: ~iw, "What distance are you?"New: ~iu, "They are pursuing unique tech"Moved: ~i1, "Oh they see me I've been spotted"
Moved to ~iy, and written as "Yeah they see me".
Replacement: See belowMoved: ~i2, "They don't see me"
Moved to ~in, and written as "No they don't see me".
Replacement: See belowMoved: ~iy, "They have shipyard"
Moved to ~il since l is the common key for capital, and also to make room for "Yeah they see me."
Replacement: See above"New": ~ik, "They have capitals"
Was moved from Other menu. This goes against the concept of using 'l' for capitals.New: ~i1, "Are you eyed?"New: ~i2, "Is the aleph camped?"New: ~i3, "Is the aleph probed?"New: ~i4, "Is the aleph mined?"
Double up with current ~iaNew: ~i7, "The aleph is camped!"New: ~i8, "The aleph is probed!"New: ~i9, "The aleph is mined!"
Double up with current ~imNew: ~i0, "The aleph is mined and droned!"
Double up with current ~idYou will note, on those last 6 VC, the questions are on the left of the keyboard and the answers on the right. I also would like to see the 'I'm eyed' & 'I'm not eyed' VC tied to Y and N because I always manage to hit the wrong one. And then it'll work with the 'are you eyed?' VC.
The double ups refer to chats I'm binding to new keys, but don't have anything to replace their old positions with. So I see no reason to change their old positions.

Tactical... (L)
No changes

Other... (Q)Moved: ~qc, "Is our base clear?"
Moved to ~ib
Replacement: "Escort con." (was ~qm)
Using 'c' as a common key for constructorsMoved: ~qe, "Escort miners"
Moved to ~qm, to use 'm' as a common key for miners
Replacement: NoneMoved: ~qr, "They have capitals"
Moved to ~ik
Replacement: "Reload please" (new)I just fiddled around in this menu, to bring cons and miners in line with the rest of the chatpack. 'Twas unnessecary.
I couldn't think of any submenu that 'Need reload' would belong in except 'Other', and other has all 36 keys already bound so I was stuck with shifting 'They have capitals' out

Orders... (O)
New Submenu"New": ~od, "Donate your money to the investor!"
Moved from Main menuNew: ~os, "Escort the carrier forward"New: ~ou, "Go probe their sectors"
'u' used since it is a common key for scoutsNew: ~oc, "Nan the con""New": ~ob, "Nan the base"
Copied from Command menu, included here for completeness's sake.New: ~oo, "Nan the bomber"New: ~om, "Nan the miner"New: ~ok, "Nan the carrier"New: ~oe, "Nan the nans"New: ~oi, "Nan the ints"New: ~op, "Stop screwing around dogfighting"
'p' used since this was originally 'stop pissing around', but changed to screwing to be less offensive.New: ~os, "Solo bomb it"New: ~ot, "... or I'll boot you"Thoughts? Complaints? Suggestions for more VC?

They'd be booted?

Seriously though, I think people can use macros instead for that. Tiger, Vulp, and I do that, probably more people. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Just come up with the .wav files juckto.

People can organize them how they want. You can make your own customization, I'll add them into my chat pack with my customization, and everyone else can integrate them however they want.

If they are useful (which it seems like they will be) I can ask dogbones/senate whether they'd be OK with pushing the .wav files via autoupdate so everyone can hear them even if they can't type them with their current chatpacks. Hell, perhaps the senate would approve changing the default chatpack for this too.

One thing's for sure though: All of this is talk, and talk is cheap.
Nothing will fall into place until the .wavs are made.

Yeah if I were you here is what I'd be doing.

Step 1
a. Start getting ideas for the VCs you want to make
b. See who may want to record them.
Step 2
a. Work on the list of chats you want to include
b. Have the people interested make some samples
Step 3
a. Finalize the list of chats you want to include
b. Pick who is going to record them
Step 4
a. Record
Step 5
a. Post them on the forum for feedback
Step 6
a. Redo any ones that people want changed and make
any new ones
Step 6
a. Have senate review

I certainly would not worry about menu structure for the moment. I'd wait until knowing the final list of VCs that will be included. I'm sure that if new chats were to go live, there is no way the current chats would be moved around since so many people have used the same shortcuts for years. They would all have to be inserted in current or brand new menus using shortcuts currently not being used.

You would always be able to create your own menu's and other people can choose to download them if they want.

QUOTE Just come up with the .wav files juckto.
Okay dokey then.

Thanks for the step-by-step AEM. Guess I'll post in General for 1b.

Oh yeah, I got a question. In the artwork directory every file seems to have both an .ogg and a .wav. Why is that?
