So now that the emperor has been dethroned. He will not be accused of being biased if he joins a squad. Come back pookus! We can even negotiate nak not yelling during squad games if that's your fancy. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

"Actions speak louder than words."

We can all post about our sadness over Pook's abscence, we can all talk about things we could do, or we can sit and think happy thoughts. I do not want to see Pook go anywhere. As BV said, the reality of it is that he is gone indefinitly. We need to face this reality and deal with it.

We need to start making @#(! happen though. ALL OF US! Not just a select few carrying the burden of the whole community. We all need to chip in. Those of us who have been around for a long time, we need to start pulling our own weight.

How we act sends echos throughout the community. If one person acts lke crap, others will, and then we have a bunch of negativity flowing in the community.

We need to all think before we act. Instead of booting a player for messing up, explain it to them. Instead of telling someone to $#@! off, talk the issue over with them. Instead of talking trash, just do not post anything.

The rules we have are very simple to follow. We all need to make an extra effort to stick to them and encourage others to do the same.

We can say all we want in this thread. However our actions is what will make the real difference. We do not have to be running servers, forking out $$$, or be an @Alleg to make a difference. Every single one of us can have a positive impact on this community, just by the choices we make. Lets work together to make the right choices.

BV,

Are there specific tasks that can be put out for 'assignment', i.e., expanding the base of volunteers who work on various things? I am not sure of excatly how to do this, but perhaps there is a list of 'duties' or tasks somewhere that can be posted? Perhaps people would be willing to volunteer to do things -- either like job sharing or specific technical tasks?

Just a thought to move things forward, is all. I have only been here since April, but I knew something was up with Pook and felt bad it was going sour for him -- he put alot of heart and soul in here and I don't think folks showed much of an appreciation for his work. So -- belatedly, thanks Pook.

We can all do things to help, batman.

One of the worst things in this community is the arrogant "You're a newb so you must be stupid" attitude that many of our members impose on the new players. They seem blind to the fact that lack of knowledge is *NOT* lack of intelligence.

I know for a fact that one of the reasons cited by Pook for his departure was that the players who are treating newbies as chewtoys and causing them to leave in DROVES are the same players who whine and complain about some small technicality of the systems he writes for us. I can't remember the exact quote, but I will paraphrase one of his reasons as: "Why should I bother spending my time to fix things for people who are working against the community?"

So how can you help?

The two biggest things you can do to help out the community are:Restrain yourself from dumping on the newbs. There are more than enough reasons to quit before getting started without you adding to it. (ie: the learning curve is steep enough... don't make it worse by making them hate the players too)If you see someone dumping on another new player, stop it. Say "Dude, quit dumping on the newb. He's new and doesn't know how to do xyz yet."
Then turn around and say "NewGuy, here's how you do that thing you asked..."Only by collectively calling eachother on our arrogant attitudes will we start to turn the arrogant attitudes. We can *ALL* help with that.

Now, don't get me wrong.

I don't want to see this community layered with fluffy plush carpet and turned 100% carebear any more than you do. There is a distinct difference between everyone being fake "kooshy feely" bottling everything up inside until some future explosion date, and everyone being honest with the new players without making them feel worse than the gum outside on the pavement.

We don't want everyone to be carebears, but we DO want everyone to respect the time and effort newer players are putting in to learn this game just like you did once before.

So... go to it!

Well, I am glad to hear that Pook is well (besides the flu).
I am not suprised, that he is a little pissed off and does not want this job anymore. I even refused to be global mod on the freealleg board, because I did not want to put up with the crap. I don't want to know, what you "experience" as the admin...
Thank you Tigereye and BlackViper for taking over, it is appreciated.

@pook:

Enjoy your life, now that the dark shadow that allegiance responsibility might have been from time to time is gone err ... no ... lemme rephrase that.

Just ... do your thing okay? And like the others have already said ty for providing this playground for us.

It would be ironic if Pook's departure was the catalyst some REAL change in the communities attitude.

If that change is positive and lasting it would be a fitting tribute as well.

Attitude has its place
"Shut up and go get me a samich" is classic Kummy and is fine tempered with Kummy being equally likely to put a vet is his place, help a newb, or help the community.

It is when people get the 'attitude' without any of the positives that we have a problem. And we have a problem, it is not unique to Alleg, but each game has to over come it in its own way or perish.

We don't need care bears but we really don't need ass hats.

I suspect Pook will pop in from time to time, either anonymously here on the boards, or under a different nick in game. I sincerely hope he does, and in doing so gets some enjoyment out of playing this great game that is still around in large part due to his individual efforts in concert with a select few others.

But I fear his days of constantly trying to push the community in a positive direction are gone. Lets hope it does not slide too far off track and lets build on the foundation he worked so hard to provide all of us.

Sure. And that place is at the door. Or, preferrably, out that door.

I don't get this, in all honesty. Are you saying it's acceptable because he's been doing it since ever? Or because it's equally likely to hit anyone?

Ahhh, nice to see that things haven't really changed ALL that much /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Here is my take on things.

Having been away for a good long time due to RL commitments and what not I have a perspective that many others do not have.

This community is AFRAID to do anything to punish a wrongdoer, especially if they are a longtime vet.

Just because someone has smacked you in the back of your head every single day for 5 years doesn't make it right for them to smack it.

Certain people around here have a god complex which has ran unchecked for years. The community was afraid to deal with this then, and are equally afraid to deal with this now. This has only fueled this "untouchable" feeling that they covet... lather rinse repeat.

Because of this we have more and more folks acting like asshats and getting away with it.

A new rule is made and some people do everything they can to break the rule without actually "breaking" the rule and if someone should ban them for it, they come around and post about it and flame and kick and piss and moan and cause the community to divide into camps about the new rule...

And for what? to effect change? No! They do so to prove their own importance in a group of self-important asshats.

Frankly I eagerly await the day when this community "cracks down" and says "here's the rule" and then ban people who want to break the spirit of the rule. You want to flame here about it? too bad, your post gets DELETED. You want to spam-post them? guess what? you get a 2 week forum ban and a 1 week game ban for not getting the hint.

But that's just me, and I'm a hard-ass.

I love this game and I love this community but let's consider what we've done to KGJV, and to Pook, and to the others who supported us before Pook and KGJV took the reins.

Let's also consider what we're all about to do to BV and Tiger.

It's time we cleaned ourselves up. the problem isn't those of us who have the maturity to change, it's those of us who either don't have that maturityor simply don't care.

lol only a few days back and already setting myself up for a good old-fashioned flamin' yay!
