The main issue with having Allegiance on Steam is that we (as in FAO), do not hold the copyright of the game.
Also the license MSR gave us when the source code was released, explicitly prevents us to market Allegiance even as a free game (on platforms
such as Steam)
The same goes for kickstarter we can't ask for funds for what we do not own.
But we as FAO cannot, since the license restricts us from doing so.
Please before necroing an old thread, do a bit of research first.
There was a misunderstanding. Im not talking about rebuilding Allegience from Microsoft. Im talking about hiring developers to build new game or to continue in Factoid work.
We can make game inspired by copyrighted MS Allegience but will not use even a piece of their code.

I havent enough information about Factoids version but he call it "GPL Engine for playing the Allegiance game" on github. GPL is perfect for our goal.
If is it just engine, it needs game data - models, textures, maps ... .

We can ask Factoid (and others) how much money they want to finish GPL engine, and we can ask how much money is needed to build game data.
Then we can try to collect it like 0AD did: https://pledgie.com/accounts/k776

And we can also help with modeling world:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMlpj0wMqbQ
Or ask for help with modeling and texturing on 3D modelers forum. They are building models just for fun, now they can help real project.

Its same with linux is done by open source developers, there are thousand of them around world.

And all can start based on Factoids work. Its perfect that it is cross platform, Im using Ubuntu only and to play allegience I must start notebook with half broken Windows (reason why I havent played for long time).

And "Special Event with Allegiance Devs" is the best (if not last .) oportunity to start speaking about it and promote it.

I see in memmbers section that this forum have 775 pages x 20 users = 15500 users. Most of them inactive of course. But let write them email about pledging for new Allegience and let them know if each of them gives 1$ ... hej, Factoid, how about 15 000$ ??? :-D
I know, this is utopic but lets try it, everything is about promoting. If it start, all we need is some good video talking about possibilityes of this project and share it on facebook, youtoube ... And we can tell, we need just small amout (from 1$) but if we collect more, we can do it better (Hi-res textures, new maps and models, even app for tablet with actual map).
Ok, we will be happy if we collect 1 000$ from memmbers.
It can take long time to develop it but it could be done.

Similar projects are very popular:
https://www.openttd.org/en/
https://openmw.org/en/

In our country we have project Kingdom come and it have collected more then 2 500 000 $ (kickstarter + their web):

Im sorry for my english, Im from Czech Republic.

Dude, you got THE plan to save Allegiance!!

I nominate rrob to spear head this initiative and see it through. He clearly has this thought out and knows what needs to be done. If anyone objects to rrob taking charge, please state your reasons why.

rrob, how soon can you get started?

Hi rrob,

I'm here because of your comment on the youtube video I uploaded of Factoid's Allegiance code.

It is not a matter of money. it's a matter of time and interest. The first thing you'd need to do is convince capable developers to want to devote their very valuable free time. There is simply a lack of capable and passionate developers in the community wiling to do so.

If the developers existed I'd be willing to bet you could easily find the money you need.

I'm a developer, and a reboot of Allegiance is something I've been craving for years. Time is indeed short right now as I'm neck deep in another project, but I'd be willing to gameplan something to see if we can get it off the ground. I'm also a lawyer, so skirting the IP issues won't be a problem.

I don't think a large team is needed, but we'd still need more than just me, b/c I can code, but can't 3d model to save my life. Does anyone interested here have experience as a project manager?

You know we already have a large group of models available. All the player created faction models are not under the FAO license. You can get the original models for every faction the community has created, one problem down.

Wow, that's great; is there one main repo?

There is. Unless it's changed recently it's in an SVN repository. Surprised it's not on github yet.

I'm not sure who owns this, but it's worth checking out: https://github.com/FreeAllegiance/Allegiance

Also, this is/was an approach to get a truly open source version of the game running on across several platforms with the current game assets:

That's our current main one Fuzz. I'm doing all patches and what not from there.
