Okay, the 174.74 driver did not help me at all (WinXP Pro, 8800 GT 512 MB).
The most 'consistent' test I've found is launching the Practice Arena training mission (6). Hit space to jump right into flying and then turn towards the base. Hit alt-f, pan back and forth a bit with the base in view. Look at the second number, in the upper left corner, the one after fps:. I get a consistent 16-18 (which sucks).

If your graphics card is supported, try the perfhud drivers.

Yeah the 174.74 drives didn't resolve it for me either.
Will try the perf application in a minute, downloading now.

Oh the irony! After months I get a working ASGS again (well kinda, needed poopoo install on C:) only to realise that my brand new dual core über machine does <15 fps in a game almost 10 years old. /sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

I ended up getting an older cheapy video card. I have to swap video cards out depending on if I'm playing Alleg or not.

Try turning off some of the graphics options. I think there may be something about the bi-directional lighting (or the lighting in general) that's doing it. I'm having intermitten video lag now with the new drivers.
