Not all corporations are taxed alike, or at all for that matter. 501©(3) covers a broad range of tax-exempt organizations, not just churches. If you want to get rid of 501©(3) tax-exempt status completely, that's fine, but it'll affect philanthropic, scientific, and educational non-profits too.

I'm not aware of the ACLU's position on the Johnson amendment, but if you've accurately described it, then I would disagree. For me, it's not "501©(3) organizations are not allowed to say certain things". It's "organizations that say certain things are not allowed to be 501©(3) corporations". The Constitution guarantees free speech, not a free soapbox, and tax-exempt status is a soapbox.

You missed the actual point I was making: churches shouldn't be 501c3.

Unless the Democrats retake the House, I would be surprised if that ever happens.

Based on the @#(! I'm hearing from the various intelligence communities... I wouldn't be that surprised. I could see lots of Republicans wanting to oust Trump in favor of Pence to look good to their voters: "Look, we have a constitutional means to get rid of a criminal president, and we replaced him with a better conservative."

I'd rather have you study Kemalism and secularism than Roman catholicism.

No, I didn't miss it, I just was saying your framing is wrong. "Taxed like any other corporation" makes it sounds like churches are uniquely the only sort of organization that doesn't get taxed.

Personally I don't have a problem with them. They're mostly just social clubs, most of them at least make some pretense of trying to make folks better people and the world a better place (among other random @#(!), and some run food banks, charities, etc. So long as they stay away from being political parties in disguise, I'm fine with not taxing them; it's not like it would really make a difference in state budgets anyways.
