Correct, though you could build a shipyard first if you like, but it would only allow you to launch freighters. Everything else would have to be researched at a tech base.

TF would probably need a re-write.



I'm not suggesting this be done, it's just an idea, and I wouldn't care if capitals were removed from the game entirely. In large games they just get massacred at any aleph they try to go through, and in small games they pod 4 pilots and win the game. They scale horribly.

creating a convoluted system where shipyard is completely dependent on other tech paths to deploy capital ships is retarded

shipyard is fine, especially after the cc10 missile destroyer perks. you still have to spend at least double what any other tech path has to spend in order to effectively field caps, and as far as offensive measures are concerned there's a reason you can get assault ships out so early and there's a reason you can buy hvy cloak 1 in garrison. as it is you can deploy a very effective mix of capital ships that can engage any target at any range, but you need to deploy them intelligently in order to do so.

SY should be off in small games.

In larger games they *can* be useful - you just have to use them intelligently as Viru says, or alternatively they're a fun way to end the game if you're rich.
