Couldn't agree more. I'm 100% for some laws passed that require some mental health screening before you can buy a gun, but it isn't going to change anything. Guns are in this country and Americans are not going to give up their guns. Ever. If they enact a gun ban or anything of the sort, there will be a civil war. People proposing that guns be banned are so completely stupid. They're living in a dream world. In a perfect world, yes, I'd love to see no guns. Only the police have guns. Then we're all on a level playing field. But guns are out there, they aren't going anywhere EVER, so we need to deal with it, not shove our heads in the sand and go whaa whaa whaa make them go away!

Bacon & others. Japan and England have done it. Do you really think it's literally impossible for the USA to get rid of the guns? It's perfectly doable if you decide to do it. Maybe the voters will eventually be fed up with being the gun violence capital of the developed world.

We havent got rid of the guns - you can still legally buy and own rifles and shotguns with an appropriate licence, and even automatics and handguns havent been banned (just that to own one requires a licence which the Home Office usually rejects). Then there is the whole illegal firearms scene, which generates (as it did before the ban) the vast majority of gun-related idiocy. We also still have mass shootings.

Remind me, what is the population and size of the three countries in your post?

It was our $#@!ing guns that gave us freedom, from England funny enough. They are literally built into our history. Sure, it's probably doable. But I firmly believe our culture, which is obviously different than others, has the capability to both live with guns and reduce crime.

My prediction is: a few but meaningless token actions like increasing the waiting period or higher requirements for buying rocket launchers will be done but nothing to solve the (real) problem. The gun problem in the US is beyond repair and I don't think this is going to change anytime.

Do I think it's literally impossible for the USA to get rid of guns? YES. I don't just "think" it. I know it. This isn't England. This isn't Japan. Stop looking at other cultures for the answer. The United States is its own thing. Guns are a part of our culture like they never have been in Japan or England. You can bleed your liberal heart all over the topic of gun control till you're dead if you like, but you'll NEVER get this country to give up it's guns. Wake up. It's not going to happen. Too many people in this country are VEHEMENTLY against gun control, even if a classroom of kindergartners gets shot up. Their answer is "OK, then train the teachers to carry guns." Which, IMO, is a more realistic solution than "ban all guns in the USA." If we were in another country where guns weren't so deeply ingrained in a large portion of the country's sense of freedom and patriotism, then yeah, I'd say start working towards some strict gun laws. But this is the United States. Not "some other country." Get your head out of the sand, grow up, and acknowledge the facts of the issue instead of wishing it away like a scared little kid.

The problem isn't the guns. At least, the problem isn't going to be solved by controlling the guns. The problem is our society's fascination with the guns. You need to change the psychology. You need to treat the mentally ill. You need to address the TRUE problem and not the guns, because like I said above, they ain't going anywhere. Sorry.

You talk about culture as if it's a fixed, unchangeable thing. Cultures change. American gun culture has been changing for years into something completely, and increasingly absurd. Ask someone older than you if people used to keep assault rifles at home. Did your grandfather own a Tommy gun? Of course not. In present day however, you can buy a 100 round drum magazine for a Glock <i>handgun</i>. Why is that not illegal?

But maybe you're right. Scew it, it's your country. But don't come crying about it if your own kid get shot to pulp.
