My kids still haven't seen any of the movies, although my oldest is about the right age. I have struggled with how to introduce the movies to them. I used to be a huge SW fan, but I became disillusioned in recent years.

Is there a version of the original trilogy still available that hasn't been mucked with as much?

My brother recently aquired the original vhs's from the 90s. May be doing a marathon beforehand? Idk, pretty much know it line by line for now

Also saw a TIE shooting backwards? Not really a reason they couldn't make pivoting guns i guess, just seems a bit hard to manage.

TIE/Xwings in atmosphere isn't new, they don't handle as well as in vacuum but it's totally canon. I'm guessing they weren't used at hoth for a few reasons, one of the main being "wtf didn't they just use a torp on those walkers"

I have no idea who the bad guys might be.

Kylo seems obsessed with Vader and wants "to finish what he started".

But Vader didn't start anything...

I'm confused.

oh well roll on December!

I haven't watched it myself, but I heard from a friend that the nerds have done a really good job on it.

I'm glad you commented on that. I thought the same and had to slow that water skipping moment about 5 times to be convinced.

I'm gonna go with they didn't have time to setup both the xwings and the speeders for cold, so they focused on getting the speeders up and running. xwings would only be good to get out of the atmosphere, otherwise they would have icing issues as xwings don't have leading edge ice boots as far as I know. Globey, back me up bro!!

Vader was out to kill all the Jedis since Anikin went postal and wiped out all the padawans in ROTS. However, he should be focused on what Vader started when he chucked the emperor over the railing in ROTJ, and gone after the remains of the empire instead. That would be finishing what Vader started... later?

This is actually the first time I've looked forward to a movie in quite some time, so I'm looking forward to this one!

This may be a valid point, if Xwings used their S foils as airfoils! A square leading edge isnt gonna generate much lift! Also if a craft can survive near 0 K I'm sure it would handle arctic temps just fine

Well, Vader was just a puppet in the grand plan of the sith.

And according to lucas's canon the sith are composed by two members only.

One master, one apprentice.

With the death of palpy and Vader the sith are extinguished.

I'm sticking with it. If you fly something around in atmosphere for any length of time, it will build ice. If they just go directly to space, ice accumulation is small. If they fly around for an hour, then ice may start to build, leading to increasing drag points which is going to make the flight erratic even if they don't us air motion for lift. Just air going over the surfaces will throw things off.

It's a generation later, so it's possible that he's been made into a myth/legend. Kylo could be referring to bringing the entire galaxy under one sovereign rule, killing the Jedi, or even just the attempt to turn Luke Skywalker to the dark side. While it's true that Darth Vader didn't "start" any of those things, it's easy enough to see why he would have been deified and a cult of personality built around him.

I think it would be cool if it turned out that Kylo had his own "head canon" of how the Empire ran and was a bit of a conspiracy theorist in that regard. "The emperor? Ha! He was just a face. Darth Vader was the real power behind the throne." Not often enough are characters in movies just *wrong* even though everyone else is trying to tell them the truth. It would be a cool motivation thing.

Also, Brood, BT is correct: ice would build up because there's so much water in the air... at least compared to space. And then the air currents would make things erratic and difficult for the X-Wings to fly properly in them. It could be that XWings can only generate lift due to angle of attack, and they also might not be useful for combat flying close to the ground. As for the proton torpedoes, there was probably concern with fallout from the blast of such a device which clearly uses some kind of nuclear reaction.
