TA, apologising for and dismissing the Apartheid state of Israel is the only silly thing here.

Hawking is absolutely right, and supporting Israel is a *#$@ move. They need to start behaving like a civilised state rather than by iron age might-makes-right rules.

Personally I think hawkings boycott is silly but that's his right.

Um, not to defend the Nazi's, but they believed the Jews were responsible for all of Germany's downfalls, so they,at least though they had a reason.

My 94 year old great uncle reminds me regularly that purging jews from the baltic states resulted in. Very poor industry and working conditions

Hitler was a self defeating megalomaniacal nutcase. His insane hate of jews / picking them as the main scapegoat drove a lot of the best educated scientists and engineers into the Allied side, or destroyed them with senseless violence. He did, or more correctly his Finance Minister, Hjalmar Schacht did. Have you read, The Wages of Destruction by Adam Tooze? Worth buying. The Nazis changed Germany from a Free Market economy into a highly interventionist one. This was a jolly old group who got to wear a snazzy uniform, live in a camp and dig irrigation ditches or build roads for seventy two hours a week for some pocket money. If they didn't fancy that they were classed as workshy and found a place in another kind of camp altogether. Another amazing thing was outlawing Trade Unions, passing a law that enabled an employer to fire a worker on the spot and required said worker to apply to a government department for permission if they wanted to move jobs.

Even if the Nazi economic miracle wasn't a smoke and mirrors exercise par excellence in cooking the books. Who the $#@! in their right mind would want to live in a fiscal utopia where the trade off was maybe belonging to some random group that was picked to have their doors kicked in, get taken away and then worked, starved and tortured in disease ridden squalor to death? Most of the Germans at the time knew nothing about the not so good stuff, and only got to see the propoganda for the "economic miracle" so they get something of a pass. With hindsiight we get to see the ugly, you really should think hard before you laud Hitler's nous in anything.

Just so we're clear, apartheid was a system of racial segregation in South Africa. In modern Israel, according to wikipedia, 20% of the population is Arab whose ethnic identity is Palestinian and they are allowed to participate in every facet of government and society. There are even Arab political parties in Israel. See here. Just so we're clear, Apartheid in South Africa meant segregation and disenfranchisement for certain ethnicities. I am aware of no such practices in modern Israel.
