Buncha $#@!ing stupid democrats up on their podiums today demanding gun control legislation. It wont help! Mass shootings are not a failure of government, nor are they preventable. I thought we learned that making something illegal doesnt really reduce access (hello, war on drugs) I hate my party sometimes.
So sad about those kids though, what a tragedy.

I do think mass shootings are a failure of government, and are preventable - but not having anything to do with gun control/lack thereof.
Basically every violent/criminal act is an economic issue at its core, making it entirely a governmental issue.
Happy people don't go on shooting sprees. Stress makes people go insane.
It will only get worse.
Why does someone go on a shooting spree?
Stress about money? Obviously economic and therefor governmental.
He's bat-@#(! crazy? He didn't get the mental health he needed - possibly for economic reasons, but governmental either way.
Bad parenting/lack of attention from parents? The government does little to prevent unfit parents from breeding, and does nothing to educate anyone on parenting. Therefor, governmental.
General lack of attention from others, especially parents? The parents both had jobs to make money. That consumed most of their time. Obviously economic.
(this particular instance seems to be very parent-related)
I say mandate gun training/carrying by teachers, make it more difficult to get married/divorced (people do both far too lightly, resulting in broken homes and general dysfunction and mental issues with children)
what our society lacks is structure and discipline, and it has lacked structure and discipline since it became no longer politically correct to have a "man of the house" because that is sexist.
and with the overuse of the credit system.
Japan is kicking ass. Why? Structure. Focus on education. That @#(! is MANDATED. And if you don't act right you know damn well your government/your dad is going to kick your ass.

There's a new sheriff in town.
J has highest suicide rate of all 1st world countries. on the other hand a very low ammount of killing sprees. Maybe their system of gun control (including samuray swords) is the reason, but probably it is because adept-ned-flanders is protecting them.Sheriff Metz wrote:QUOTE (Sheriff Metz @ Dec 15 2012, 04:49 AM) Japan is kicking ass. I have a johnson photo in my profile since 2010.
I'm pretty sure the US has the largest amount of people who are on prescription antidepressants to treat their depression
otherwise we'd have the highest suicide rate

I just don't think we are technologically advanced enough in our understanding of genetics and psychology to figure out what really causes these kinds of phenomenon. Economics may be important, also it may not be. I don't think we have enough of the variables in the equation to start adding things up.
My hunch is that there is a substantial genetic influence, which when combined with the right environment, triggers a kind of state of mind or state of being that makes a person more likely to do something they would normally never do. I'm not saying there is a "kill 20 kids gene," but the mind is pretty complex and a few levers flipped either way can have dramatic effects. I believe in free will, so for me a flipped gene doesn't = different behavior. Rather, i think it just changes the statistical probabilities of various behavior.

a negligible amount of people actually have a chemical imbalance in their brain that is beyond their control
99% of people being treated for anything mental, have issues to do with their own upbringing/environment (governmental)
and those that do have those the brain issues beyond their control are almost always a result of drug use by themselves or their parent(s)
and drug use is governmental/economic, as well

Care to post a source? Scholarly sources only, no popular media. Go.Sheriff Metz wrote:QUOTE (Sheriff Metz @ Dec 14 2012, 08:34 PM) a negligible amount of people actually have a chemical imbalance in their brain that is beyond their control

As much as I hate to say this...I'm afraid this is reality in the modern world. There are too many people who are in the position to "fall through the cracks" of society for a Government/societal solution. This guy seems to have hated his mother for what ever reason. He then took the "I hate all humans" attitude. The key thing to me is that he killed his mother before going on this rampage. How do you prevent something like this? Thought police? We can't micro-manage society. This is not about gun control. It is not about genetics. It IS about the over an over-whelming sense of individuals who don't have the fortitude to cope with life in the modern world. It's human nature to blame others for you're personal problems. Most people have the fortitude to over come that and deal with their situation.Others lose that ability and in hard times manifest this into "I hate the world" lunacy. You can't and will not legislate this away.It is reality now. And very unfortunate.
