The whole point that some above have missed is that if you don't know it's called free allegiance you can't find it by typing free allegiance.
The front page is well ranked and if you do certain searches the front page comes up.
However the front page text is crap.
If someone is willing, you can fix that in minutes. I however, am keeping my hands off of it.
Our low google ranking
I decided to relive the days gone by in my new blog.

Remember, what I say is IMO always. If I say that something sucks, it actually means "I think it sucks" OK?

That's the problem... more popular related games have big $$ behind them. They have a chance to reach "the top" of the Google search when someone types "space combat video game".Spinoza wrote:QUOTE (Spinoza @ Dec 23 2011, 10:37 AM) You should be able to find allegiance when you reach for other more popular related games.
I found Alleg after playing freelancer, for example.

My mom has a website, PlanesGalore.com, and she hasn't spent any money on SEO, just time. This means updating keywords, having a sitemap, and making sure that Google knows we even exist. Also, I know of some methods for removing/preventing forum spam, while at the same time allowing it to be searchable. I would be willing to spend some time on it for Alleg...raumvogel wrote:QUOTE (raumvogel @ Dec 23 2011, 07:54 AM) That's the problem... more popular related games have big $$ behind them. Some people are like a Slinkie. They aren't good for anything but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

FYI, having a sitemap won't help, because everything what a crawler should find is linked via plain html. There are no flash or java applets which contain important links, which crawlers can't index.
The robots.txt disallows indexing of the news page, that also means that crawlers won't find links to wiki and other important content...
What you need is having external links:

The history of open-source Allegiance is paved with the bodies of dead code branches, forum flame wars, and personal vendettas. But a community remains because people still love the game.

We need landing-pages ...
... but what should these pages represent then?
Our Events.
From squadgame to tournament will get us a broad summ of these sites.
Actually, it is quite some ammount of time we need to create them in my point of view - but they could be worth it when we find the girlz'n'boyz creating them. Perhaps someone recorded the game and put it up on some tube, so linky beside some review text.
My 2 Cents.

As other have stated, SEO isn't about money, but focused effort. (Not unlike a successful bomb run, interestingly enough.)
It's about deciding what potential players would use to search for us (not an easy task, subject to opinion - here be dragons), placing those keywords on our site in an appropriate manner (title tags, h1 tags, etc.) and getting quality links pointing to our site (preferably using those keywords).
It's certainly do-able. But it's a marathon, not a sprint, to win the ranking race and it takes regular concerted effort. Not impossible, of course, but it needs to be worked regularly.
FYI, in an effort to help with this, the marketing group started up a wordpress blog thanks to the efforts of Saisoma. It was working, I thought. Alas, Sai fell off the face of Allegiance. Such is the case with all things dependent upon the efforts of volunteer folks.
I'm NOT saying it can't be done. I am just pointing out the barriers in our way. They are not insurmountable, but it does take regular, concerted and patient effort to be successful. Who is up to the task?

My .02?
From a technical point is seems possible to have a safe and crawler happy forum, keeping parts of it closed.
It costs our system admin time to implement and maintain the scripts / blocklists. It's mostly clergy work and can be partially automated. I do not believe TE or TB have that luxury of time for this adventure.
Being a commercial profit company, a good way to make alleg uber visible is by paid ad words. If someone emails the word - say - "game" in gmail, FA pops up. Costly yes.
There is of course the small issue with .net, .org, .com, .xxx, etc. Some are expiring (GoDaddy), we can prevent "clones" from reappearing which blocks our visibility.
Suggest to tidy up the active squadplayers list. Better have a small list of active players so it does not look so... errr... dead.
