For me the point of Red Dwarf was The Odd Couple IN SPACE! Anything that detracts from that pretty much misses the point IMO.

That had it's charm, but you can't do just that forever. Having Kochanski as a living member of the crew livened things up quite nicely.

Also the best character was Norman Lovette's Holly. Anything not featuring him was poorer for the loss. (And Season 8 just plain sucked regardless of his involvement).

The main issue was that they simplified the characters personalities. They took their traits to the "more" extreme and shallowed them out. Where before you felt like you knew the person, now they were just characters playing a part.

At least for me.

when red dwarf started to become @#(! was at the start of series III, when kryten came along and ruined the dynamic.

in fact "queeg" may be the best episode.
