Yes, just use the general Alleg server. There is only a specific AFS-channel for trainingsessions.

i map a key ("j" for me) that targets the nearest friendly pod. if you are picky about who want to pick up, in the f3 view, you can press the numpad + to zoom in and pick exactly who you want to autopilot to.

if you arent picky, once you hit j, u can press p for autopilot to the nearest pod.

The above method is good for picking up a "pod parade" - many pods, which have rowed for a little while towards nearest base ad are nicely lined up. I doesn't do much good in a different scenario though - cleaning up right after a furball.

When there was a big engagement and you happen to be the last one standing, the pods will most likely be scattered all around you. In this case, it's best just to stop and wait for them to come to you, only moving towards the last one. This way really is usually faster and much less annoying to anyone you are currently not autopiloting to ;)

I find that unless I move on the same plane as someone else, it takes maybe 3-4 passes before someone intersects.

It's good that pods have low sig, because if a foe followed one, it would really suck

Sometimes foes do do that - particularly if there is a pod train (several pods). They'll want to take out the pickup guy (usually a scout) to keep everyone in pods.

The autopilot tends to suck, it tends to only work if it has enough distance between the autopiloting ship and the target to line up nicely, and really sucks if two ships are autopiloting to each other.

it's also the best way to find Rescue probes if you know the enemy has one in your sector and the enemy pods are stupid enough to fly straight there.

So if I see a enemy pod about to enter their base should I kill it?
It seems logical to me...

it's not something you should go out of your way to do

also if your in an enemy sector and your that close to their base, your probably there do do something important like killing a miner, bombing or whatever.
