My first few weeks
Thank you for your input!
I'm not being sracastic, this is excellent info, includes some serious non-obvious problems.
Many of these are being handled by a few brave individuals, like Orion's work on Modulus... many other people just forget how hard it was to get into this game.

I agree with you on most of the points, moto. If it weren't for the community, I wouldn't be playing right now. I think that the ships do need a graphical update (Dreg scouts look like friggin fish) , but I don't think the first thing a newbie is going to do is go to Mesial's. As for the abbreviations, the wiki page is somewhat accurate but there is still some stuff lacking. For example, I had no idea what "scout midlow, dark" meant before l1ngus told me.

Thank you for the quick response!
QUOTE Just a note. The Training missions are considered a miniscule part of the allegiance experience, which is why don't receive much developer love. The commuity added 1 extra training mission a few years ago, and that took a substantial amount of work. Generally people are recommended to go into game...
Yeah, but that was kinda my problem. I was eager to get online, but was and still am unprepared. I understand the tutorial stuff is hard to update, but from my point of view its was/is very frustrating.
QUOTE The ships in the training missions are "Dumb" no missiles, perfect aim, no strafing.....
It's a bit of a consequence of there being one main game so you can't get into a less hostile environment easily.
Well, the "perfect" aim was the only helpful bit. Heh. Yeah, only one real game going on is not impressive from a new players point of view. Baptism by fire really sucks though. Probably for everyone.
QUOTE Interesting idea. Would need some thought
I assume you've seen this page?
Yes, but my point was that I did not see any of that until long after I was thrown into battle.
QUOTE Yeah - we've (well - cashto wrote it) tried to give a 1 page overview of how to make yourself useful. But there is a lot of things that need fleshing out adding for new players I think.
Yeah, much of it was helpful. Although as a beginner, the last ship I want to fly is a scout. I understand they have a vital role and all, but honestly they are the least fun to fly at least from my perspective. Actually, I think I have acquired an unhealthy hatred of them.
QUOTE Not entirely sure what you mean here. sorry - that might be just me.
Ok, when I search the Wiki, is that search term put on a list the Wiki admins can see? I thought it might be helpful if they could see what people were searching for all the time and whether that search was helpful to them. Example: When I was searching for stuff about ramming all I got was this page (http://www.freeallegiance.org/FAW/index.php/Ramming) which did not explain what people were really talking about in the game. Ramming builders to stop them from lining up and ramming bombers to make them go faster (I honestly thought the player that requested this was being a dick).
QUOTE Have you seen this page for linking training together by the way?
Yes, saw that my first day I think. I tried to read through it but my eyes glazed over.
I am sure maintaining and updating the Wiki is tons of work, but try to keep in mind that every term you guys use does need to be explained somehow. I still find myself reading it and thinking "Yeah, but what does that actually mean?" I have no context yet of what the hell most stuff means.
And having to download more programs, which I have not done yet, to learn another program is... discouraging. I mean, I am glad there is something there, but yuck. Everything seems like another disconnected step to the next step or just learning how to play.
I apologize, I don't mean to bad mouth what I am sure is a lot of work. It is just still a bit frustrating. I can't imagine what it was like before.
QUOTE I assume you've seen this page?
One thing you can do in game to learn a bit about techpaths is to go into F4 while in game. You can see what your commander is researching etc.
If you check the "Show all" button at the bottom of the page you can see what you need to research to get various bits of euquipment and ships. Hope this helps a bit.
Yes, but I admit that page was not really helpful. There is information there, but I can't see how the tech path flows. I mean like an actually flow chart or graphical tree showing me what leads to what and why it is needed or how it is of benefit. I am new... show me shiny, pretty, simple first. Like the home page... it got me to download the game.
QUOTE You can upgrade your graphics you know?
You can download new upgrades from the site Mesial hosts
Or you can test out Orions new tool Modulus -Although it's in Beta, so heed the warnings.
There is work on making some graphical available in the installer (I think), but we still want Alleg. when newly installed to run on Aging PCs for the most part.
That is AWESOME. Yes having all of that optionally installed right off the bat would be sooooooo helpful. I don't know if my netbook can handle some of that, but I'll be trying most of it. I installed the CortUI and the transparency stuff today. OMG, huge difference. Not just visually pleasing but hugely beneficial too. Make the whole interface look like that! Is there also an upgrade for all the other screens and backgrounds? Honestly make it the default. I remember when I first ran the game... I thought its was very ugly (too much brown/red) and low res. Made me think the game was going to suck.
QUOTE really? Not sure how we fix that hmmm
Just explain the two are exclusive of one another. In fact, initially, I did not know the difference between Team, Faction and Squad. I thought they were related. Like squads flew for certain factions.
QUOTE The admins are listed on the wiki., but maybe that should be more prominent.
Oh yeah, exactly what I wanted. Maybe include ways to contact them?
QUOTE Good point! Perhaps we should add a "how to PM people in-game" page to the wiki Cadet I lessons. (Mind you I've just noticed Cashto's quick learner page has a section on it).
Yes, helpful, but I don't remember it explaining clicking on peoples name to talk to them.
QUOTE Again - thanks for your feedback - and I hope I've answered some of your questions.
Very helpful, thank you.
