As my sigma decreases, it will be much more difficult to rank up. I tend to just join a team quickly so I can play and ignore stacks and things. I have fluctuated between a 5 and 6 for months now, never touched a 7.

Even in the Academy it's stated that newbie servers SHOULD only serve as a way to test a few controls and features of the game. But that's pretty much doable in individually created custom games as well. I'm all in for telling newbies how to play and providing them a place but right now the newbie server does more harm than good in my opinion, as any newbie automatically goes and STAYS there instead of learning the game among the regulars/vets.
I disagree with this. The average newbie isn't going to know how to set up a game. They need a place they can join to learn the controls without getting beat up too badly.

There are far too many (5)s around who are still learning the very, very basics. You can't tell who they are without looking at f6, and it upsets balance as they're sometimes not 'worth their rank'.

As for solutions, I don't know.
Removing newbie servers isn't a bad idea.
There can be such a large gap between new newbies and newbies who know the cheesetech buttons that people are gonna get whored on anyway. Even with newbies servers I don't see the point in artificial inflation.

DANG YOU JIMBOLD - now im going to have to assume all 5s are 0s.

That's pretty much all it CAN measure. There are a very small handful of players that have enough knowledge and respect in the community to actually change games (there are many more that have the knowledge but nobody listens to them), and they are for the most part the top ranked players.

The reason firepox is an issue is people like that drive away noobs. They see someone like them, with a low rank, on their server, completely owning them and feel that they are idiots and terrible at the game and give up since this other noob is so much better than they are.
I used to think that horribly losing or getting whored or booted was bad. Until time after time I started realizing I could learn from it. You don't learn by winning, you learn by doing something stupid and losing.

The problem is, some people who are decent players but tend to lose (TomBombadil is a good example) take a long time to reach 5. Tom was a 3 or 4 for a couple of months even though he could whore a lot of vets into submission if needed. If people like that have access to the newbie server, it may create newbie stomping issues that are difficult to resolve.

I dont know if it's possible to have a non-displayed flag or something that kicks off once you hit a certain number of hours, and that is used to prevent access to the newbie server, but it may work better.

How abour we make Newbie server to disallow people after certain HOURS of gameplay instead of depending on Rank

Unless thts to hard, its the best option imo :)

Well, seeing as how I'm a newb, let me put my two cents in.

In the few days I've been playing there is never anyone on the newb servers to play with so I just join the regular games.
It still is quite a learning curve but I am getting the hang of it and don't spend half the time podded anymore.

If I don't start seeing some newb server activity soon, I would say just shut it down and let us do custom newb games on the main server.

Rockbridge: that's not how the server system works. We can't shut down the "newbie server" because there is no dedicated server for newbies. "Newbie server" is actually just a misnomer for the game with the word "newbie" in it that only people rank <5 can play in. There are two such newbie games, one on Solap and one on GPZ (these are two of the current three active servers, the third being Planet2, which, afaik, hosts no newbie games). We won't be shutting down these servers.

You already can create custom games on the main server(s), you just hit "create game." You may be out of luck on Sundays though because some servers have maximums to how many games can be created, and there are generally a lot of games on Sundays (squad games, after all).
