What about having a camera circling/zooming around a sector with a random base and some drones as the background?
I can't think of a simpler, beautiful, one-size-fits-all, scalable background that wouldn't need much scalable artwork.
[With current artwork and lack of proper transparency, this idea is plain disastrous.]

first step is probably just to try and offload everything that is hardcoded into .mdls. I tried to make a mod which doubled the res to 2X the standard 800*600 to explore changing the res (2X res was because it is simpler to double all the nubmers). I soon found that while I could double a lot of things, some things like like which fonts were used in some places and the "text boxes" for some fonts and other things were hard coded, so while you could double the font size, you could only see the top left quater of the text because it was being clipped by a window.
This would give us a very clunky, non-dynamic system of providing multi-res allegiance with changing resolution of things being done by installing modified versions of the dialog.mdl and other bmp.mdl and .mdl files.
Ideally we would want something which lets us dynamically change things with the res-selector in game, but that would be a much bigger task, and would probably mean changing the mdl system significantly. .XMdL anyone?

Welcome to 2006!Roth wrote:QUOTE (Roth @ Aug 31 2009, 08:34 PM) ...Have people actually succeeded at recompiling the client then? Last I knew (admittedly this was years ago) the horrible mess that was the MS source code was so tangled that no one could really get it to compile.

Really! Alright, time to pick up the source again then!badp wrote:QUOTE (badp @ Sep 1 2009, 04:42 AM) Welcome to 2006!![]()

We also need an artist to change all the graphics of course.

Where would I go for specific instructions on how to get a compiler to choke through the source? The wiki? Pester a dev?
EDIT: Never mind, ignore my noobish whinging for people to tell me everything. I'll do the right thing and find it myself. c.c
