I've never seen the brown aleph...although many naughty things come to mind

NICE!
(and I thought they were all hard coded / procedurally generated!)

You've never launched in your home sector?

The aleph model is generated with code - the texture is not.

Ahh, but in the home sector, the alephs are blue! It's alephs leading *to* the home sector that are brown.

I knew that there were brown alephs before from the Wiki, but I could honestly barely tell the difference with the original graphics. Or at least, never noticed it. This mod makes the difference very, very clear. Just another reason why it's awesome-tastic.

The originals are even more different, but they are also a bit funky. Makes me pay little attention to which one they are.

Between the 2 high-res versions? Sorry not on me at the moment. The change isn't dramatic, I couldn't fix them much without washing things out completely. I do have .bmp's if you want to try to tweak them yourself (sadly I lost the .psd's) here.

Yeah, that's exactly true. :D

I've just re-installed Allegiance, so I've had a chance to compare the originals to the high-res version after getting used to the modded alephs for the past while. The originals really are so drab it's easy to ignore which one you're looking at.

However, one thing I did notice is that the originals seem to have a somewhat... smoother animation? What I mean is this: In the high-res alephs, you can sort of see where one rotating "cylinder" of texture ends, and the next one begins. It looks like the spirally pattern is "flowing" down a series of steps or some such, with noticeable boundaries or "layers" visible within the aleph as it rotates. In the originals, this is not the case: They seem very smooth to the point where it's absolutely impossible to notice this effect, and it looks like you're looking at a smooth, continuous funnel. This is only possible to notice when looking at the actual movement in the aleph, so still images don't quite get this across.

I don't mean to put the awesome mod down, mind you: It's still very beautiful, and looks much more eye-catching and pretty than the originals.

I know what you mean. The cilinder boundaries aren't the dark bands, though. They are in the smoother part of the animation.

The original blue aleph has color bands instead of dark bands, anyway.
