Since I gave up ACS to spidey, I've been secretly developing the idea of a live-training program for new players: something where vet commanders walk each team through a scripted set of moves, while they learn/practice basic tasks like scouting, probing, nanning, etc. More later.
Unfortunately, so other things came up, so I had to pause developing it. This is what I have so far.
Live Train
I'm toying with a new project for the Training Zone, called Live Train
Step One:
1) Assemble a team of reliable people to run the Live Train program
2) We script the early/mid stages of a game
Giga v Giga (make them use scouts)
Map is HiHigher.
Yellow's op goes midhi. Blue's op goes midlow. Yellow's 2nd op goes low. Blue's 2nd op goes high
Both teams go sup
We organize some miner killing and miner defense teams, and give teams 7-10 minutes to try killing miners.
We organize bombing runs of the low/high bases. Each team gets 1 try
-Script ends and teams have 30 mins to finish.
We draft a narration to go along with the game script. Topics discussed int he narration should include
1) Configuring your scout (packing/mounting nans)
2) Finding alephs
3) Escorting your constructors
4) Probing and miner d.
5) Miner o and killing nans
6) Investing/Donations and how money works. (getting a ship that costs money)
6) Running a good bomb run, and defending against it
Next we get Lawson to record the narration.
To run a Live Training game
1) Need 4 vets. 2 to command and 2 to help out in the field.
2) Everyone has to be signed on to TS and join the live train channel.
3) One of the commanders plays the narration over ts, pausing it when necessary. The two coms should PM/TS back and forth to ensure that no one falls behind.
4) Run through the game script and the narration. Total time should be 30ish mins.
5) Once it ends, the Live Train helpers should rally their newbies and try to win the game.
Obviously, discipline amongst newbies is vital
1) Live Train is only for people who want to learn how the game is really played, rather than playing capship wars on the newbie server.
2) Pilots should refrain from disruptive chat, spamming, arguing with the instructors, or otherwise disrupting the exercise (boot if not).
3) Pilots should follow all instructions at all times (boot if not).
@Cadet LIVE!

Nice writeup Clay. I like it,
My experience is to make this work the organization should be as follows:
1) Pick a day or days during the week to practice.
2) Pick a time just prior to each practice.
3) Show up.
THAT's it. Don't worry about what you will be doing or having x number of vets and y number of cdts. The training will be based on who shows up and what they want to learn.
We had this during my cdt class and the main obstacle was getting ppl together. Once we got everyone together the training flowed naturally.

I've been wanting to help out with something like this for the longest. Someone needs to teach the noobies how to scout, seriously.

"clay pigeon quote ... post #11 above ... too long to re paste...
most nobel (yes nobel) plan set, but as I've read in past various posts I can't quote at the moment, cdt 1 newbie helps sort out those intent on learning the game from those who'd drop off anyway, which imo is a valuable function.
Speaking as one who's completed the CDT-1, if one just takes a bit of time to actually read and heed the material provided one could become an effective contributing scout/nan in just 4 to 6 weeks from first play.
The material is quite well assembled.
CP's plan set would be super awsome (even old guys can use super awsome) in CDT-(A)dvanced, expecially numbers 3, 4, 5, and the second 6 (I think supposed to be 7) for many reasons.
scout loadouts for newbies would be very helpful. It took me till mid novice to base an effective situ/load out plan.
This input is of course based on my yet limited knowledge of Alleg. Since I'm currently applied for the next CDT A, info I'll learn from that may alter the course of this current input.

Technically, I dont have access to the Cadet Boards any more, after I left SF. I can still see them, as I am participating in the rewrite, but in accordance with BV's wishes, I wont post in there.ogorass wrote:QUOTE (ogorass @ Jun 20 2008, 09:37 PM) Adam4 used to rally some Cadets and organize a traing game once a week or two. He might have some more insight, ask him.
The ideal way to do something like this is to pick one topic, something that may be kind of difficult to learn. Explore the common misconceptions, and the valid strategies, then get everyone participating, depending on the situation, it could be 1v1, or a team v team (DF/Mines practice or Bombing practice)
(Cadets used to make great prox eaters....no more, they avoid it now /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />)
I'd be willing to do it every second saturday (Not the Zone Game saturdays), if the Cadet's can bribe BV /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />.

back on topic: You might want to make it a requirement that all participants have TS. (They don't have to have a mic, but they have to be able to hear the commands.) That would make it a whole lot easier to corral folks into the right area(s), hear the orders being issued, etc. Typed chat just doesn't cut it for this kind of thing.
