Not that it makes the loss any easier, it doesn't, it just makes it that much more tragic that a number of us have been in similar situations.
No matter what your beliefs are afterlife wise, the way I see it you've got only one shot at this 'go around'. Not matter how bad it is and no matter how good what comes after may be (if that is your belief) this life is unique and you never can tell what the future holds so stick it out. These are meaningless words for those already deeply depressed but they may be encouraging to those that have not reached that point yet.
