If you realy wanna do this, then you'd need to look closely at how close you want to stick to the books, and more specificaly to which books. Personaly I think it's best to take tha gap between the first and second book (or alternatively between the 4th and 5th book, though that'd make it harder for setting the races). Between the first and second book falls the galasctic conquest of the fremmen under the banner of the self-appointed emperor Paul Muad'dib.
If we take that setting we'd get these houses:
The fremmen
Benne Tleilax
Benne Gesserit
House Corrino
House Harkonen
House Richesse
House Vernius (the rulers of Ix)
House richesse is optional, since it does not play a huge part in the first novel. It is however important in the "prelude to dune" novels
However, i fear it'd be hard to directly replace these houses with their corrosponding Allegiance factions.
It is known that only Richesse and Harkonnen possesed the technology for making stealthcrafts (Richesse developed it and Harknonen bought it of them. Afterwards, the Richessian tech center which developed it was destoryed, but it's not impossible that they'd rebuild it). House Vernius produces the highliners, giving them unparraleld acces to space and they also posses the best technology, toghetter with Richesse, the Fremmen posses the spice, giving them a huge economic advantage, and also nearly the full controll ofver the highliners (possibly shared with house Vernius). Harkonnen is the industrial powerhouse and Corrino has acces to a huge amount of resources, as well as highly skilled fighters.
Secondly, we got a bunch of technical problems (wich could also work out verry well if done good). First of all, there are no alephs in Dune. However, if it would be possible to make it so that only cariers can cross alephs, then we'd be able to create highliners.
Besides that, shields in Dune are immune to annything fast. So we'd need to make slow projectiles (The novel speaks about multi-stage projectiles). To balance it out, these projectiles would need to be tracking. We could also make laser guns that act as kamikaze weapons when fired on a shielded object, causing a HUGE explosion (sub-attomic according to the book). Alternatively, we could make shields drain energy, or make ion storms that disrupt shields.
The book doesn't tell anything about the size of ships, only that the largest ship in a fleet is still capable of landing on a planet. However, we could use confiscated highliners as cap ships.
Officialy, there is no AI in Dune. Bit Ix does have the capability to make it. So either we make all ships manned except the Ixian, or we give Ix the phoenix speciality to build AI fighters.
Lastly, how does the economy work? Spice is related to the Sand Worms. So logicaly there would be no spice asteroids. However, we could use some other resource. Does anyone know what the resources are for Richessian mirrors?
