Raindog wrote:QUOTE (Raindog @ Apr 22 2007, 11:27 PM) My best analogy is the advent of Ballot Initiatives here in the U.S. Basically, special interest groups work to get specific poll questions to be voted upon directly by the public rather than through their duly elected representatives. The poll questions, however, are so ambiguously worded that the average voter has no real idea what exactly what the are voting for. Your congressperson, however, has lots of resources unavailable to the general public to help them understand what exactly is being proposed.
i think this actually has the best of both worlds.

the ZL can ask the community what they think with asgs poll (ballot initiave), but then the ZL (senator in the above) can use the information (resources un-available to public) they have to decide to go with the community or not as its their decision in the end.

also, the ZL can discuss things with other ZL's of their zone so its not a total dictatorship.

also, the ZL can just make a post in their zone, people who are active and actually read that zone can respond, but people who know nothing about say art dev and never read the art forum wont reply because they don't see it where as a asgs poll would ask them things they don't know about.

so, its all good, lets see how well it goes /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Aside from disbanding the senate, nothing much else seems to have really changed except for a more formal announcement of who's been leading different aspects of the community. (edit: already stated a couple times since I clicked the reply button /doh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="doh.gif" /> )

You may or may not want to add me as a contact in the "FAQ & Procedures" thread under Training and Education or Documentation for the Help Menu since I'm always accepting submissions. It's still in need of a lot of work and which I'll probably start back up when I finish off the current semester at college. However I already have a statement to PM me about it on the front page of it so it may not be necessary.

While I personally see the change as a Good Thing™, there are a couple rather ridiculous points in that open letter. Makes me wonder if Thal really meant those, or if he was just being diplomatic to the point of... meh, whatever.

In general I like the change... but
FAZ Development (Beta) should be inside of Code Bugs & Suggestions
because code bugs was always concerning the current version and FAZ beta always dealt with future versions and as such the current arrangement makes little sense.

(As noted in the FAQ, subject to security of the FAO) They may appoint as many people to assist them as needed. They will eventually have a backup in place in case they have to leave for a bit due to RL. All major changes will involve seeking the communitys feedback via an ASGS poll.

I also was hesitant at first about the change. FYI, this has been in the works and discussion since the first of the year. We sat back and observed who was doing the work and how it was being done. You may not have realized it, but the system has been in place (other than ozzy's position) for several months and has been rolling right along.

Oh we were well aware, but some of us still held out a(n albiet cynical) glimmer of hope /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Asheron brings up a good point. What will happen to controversial code changes? ASGS polls?

I'm mildly ambivalent.

Given that I like and respect all of those particular ZLs, my concern is that I don't know how ASGS polling will be working. Direct democracy in practice, so far as I know, has never ever worked. At all.

Other than that.... well, it takes a lot more clicks now to get to the forum I want. Bleh.

Hint Lykourgos, create a hot links on your desktop, I do!

Yes Shiz, any major code change will go to a public vote. This was one of the topics we went over last night in our meeting. The ZL will still have final call, but with feedback from the ASGS poll, his staff, the other ZL's and the Admins, the right choice will happen.
