Has anyone read all of the DataNet posts? The first set is available on 's site, but the complete first four can be found here, at PlanetAllegiance. Unfortunately, the posts only go up to 150, not 172. I've been rummaging through the Internet Archive, however, and dug up most of the remaining 22. Anyone interested in the "storyline" behind Allegiance should check it out.
Just more thoughts on how my proposed storyline would go (SPOILERS, some, if you haven't read the DataNet stories):
I think the story would probably take place after DataNet post set 3.0, after the victory of the human alliance against the Rixians, but before the disappearance of CEO Mercedes Kelleher from Gigacorp, the Rixians established an outpost in the outer Solar System and the Iron Coalition invented the (volatile) He3 substitute fuel. When GTVA shows, eventually a conference is called with all factions, organizing a ceasefire that states the IC is correctly the post-UN human gov't, Gigacorp has a right to most of its holdings, the Belters can be the future regional government of the asteroid Belt, and that the Rixians need to be negotiated with. Needless to say, not everyone is happy, especially the BIOS, and the ceasefire is often punctuated by faction-on-faction violence.
Iron Coalition: As a disclaimer, the IC is my favorite faction as far as the story goes, since they are the closest legitimate successor body to the governments of Earth. Basically, the arrival of the GTVA would be a godsend to them. The GTVA would realize that the IC, as an actual military and not corporate security, independent pirates, or fanatical augments, is the best hope for a stable Solar System. At the very least, they are the ones preserving the form and function of a real government, if not the freedoms. With their support, the GTVA probably steps away from development of robotic pilots and BIOS-derived superhumans, and so there isn't a defection.
Ironically, members of the IC may see the GTVA as weak, despite their greater military and technological edge. *Nerd alert* The Beta Aquilae Convention in Freespace 2, basically the Constitution/Geneva Convention of the Terran-Vasudan Alliance, shows that the GTVA was actually quite lenient against human enemies (as the missions against the NTF show). They allow for neutrality for civilians, no lifepod-killing, and most differently from the IC, good treatment for enemy POWs. This, plus their rather friendly stance with the Vasudans, an alien race, will be sure to agitate the more aggressive minds of the Iron Coalition. I suspect that ex-NTF people will contact members of the IC, and there would eventually be an IC-civil war. Only this time, the defectors aren't people who say that the IC has gone too far; rather they'll be the one sayiing that the IC hasn't done enough. The seeds of corruption and oppression within the IC have been sown, and eventually the GTVA will have to make war with at least one portion of it.
Gigacorp: In the original Allegiance story, Kelleher disappears for a while and returns to GC, but her head of security became the leader and does not let her reassume power. Additionally, many claim that she's a clone. The appearance of the GTVA prevents those events from happening, however, Markham is still possibly an IC-agent.
More interestingly, GC will gain much from trading with the GTVA. They won't be happy that the GTVA recognizes both the IC and the Belters, but they'll be content to have their holdings (especially on Mars) legitimized along with that. They also get the rights to expand into the Freespace universe, though they'll face stiff competition from the native companies, which are mostly closely-connected with the GTVA, not to mention patriotic and loyal. In return, the Galactic Terran-Vasudan Intelligence will act with Iron Coalition intelligence agencies and certain Belters to create a more competitive market in the Allegiance universe. They promote the creation of companies independent of GC control, many which are granted exclusive rights to manufacture Freespace-universe tech. Though they're not so much as united with each other as they are all against Gigacorp, they are collectively dubbed "the new Crimson Group."
Belters: Though the frontiersmen are constantly paranoid about the possibilty of the GTVA sending several Orions into the Belt and just annexing it all for the IC, Orion Sholes and Lennox are willing to accept the Treaty of Terra (as the conference above is called), and though they continue to arm themselves and attempt to access GTVA ships (more by underhanded trading and spying than flat-out pirating). Because of the Belters' open society, there are many GTVA refugees or colonists who are accepted there in exchange for information and technology. Some of them include ex-NTF rebels, who spread their message for a Neo-Terra. They eventually gain enough of a sub-faction to seriously challenge the balance between Sholes and Lennox for control of the Belters.
BIOS: They're left out of the loop. After the initial exploration fleet is attacked by them multiple times, the GTVA realize that there is no chance for negotiating with the fanatics, who have biologically indoctrinated their own children. However, they are not in the mood to fight any war in the Alleigance-universe, since the possibilty of a Shivan return is always high. So, the GTVA supports all other factions in trying to defeat the BIOS, or at least containing their power.
In return, the BIOS hate the GTVA just as any other stalegene faction, and are constantly trying to gain access to their tech. Just as in the DataNet stories, the BIOS continuously has civil wars now and again between their ruling council and new generations of more aggressive fighters.
Rixians: The GTVA seriously does not want to get involved in a fight with them because the Shivans are much worse and they would be a serious distraction. So they are in favor of some sort of negotiation
The Rixians, in return, also do not want to face off against the massive Terran destroyers, though they see that both the Freespace Terrans and the Vasudans must inevitably be converted to the ways of Rix. Using a public campaign of open smiles, they have favored cultural exchanges and similar tactics to send Rixian scientists to study the Freespace universe, and they are very interested in the Shivans.
Neo-Terra Front: As stated above, the three human factions, as well as the GTVA, have had a spike in anti-alien, anti-status quo sentiment. Guided by ex-NTF people, they've reformed their organization and stage a secret terrorist war, seeking to retake the Allegiance Earth and eventually its solar system.
Hammer of Light: While most Vasudans are going along with the GTVA program (since, after all, they're one half of the alliance), the Hammer of Light has had its numbers grow with the discovery and emmigration to the free universe of Allegiance. Many settlers on certain systems linked by alephs are secret members of the HoL, and seek to both overthrow the GTVA back home and to conquer the weaker human factions there. They also want to fight the Rixians, who they see as blasphemously usurping the role of the gods. However, even within the HoL, there's a tiny minority who may believe that the Rixians are indeed gods, but the are the very few of the few. Anyways, this would lead to a lot of alien-on-alien violence, which is cool.
