I'm curious what their "design" for Allegiance 2 would be and how varied their ideas are/were?
I'll bite. All of this with a note that my work never left the basic networking / gameplay phase. I don't consider the project dead, more just on a pause while I spend time on other parts of my life (family, moving, etc).

I took a look at some of my notes from late last year and they focused around the following points. Presented in no particular order as there was no single overall goal.
Maintaining community content approach (ability for the community to create/edit cores & high level gameplay) Simplifying tough aspects of the game for new players. Example: making a nan that acts like Mercy's beam from Overwatch. Make it default on all scouts. All new players can immediately help by just being in a scout. No garbage about inventory management, no worrying about how to aim perfectly. Finding ways to make the game flexible towards rewarding players for team based behaviors. Increased statistics at games end - ones that highlight actions beyond K/D ratio (though that would still be good too). Shortening the time to play the game. The game would fully support a "normal" game, but also allow for "quick start" rounds where we can drop the first 15 minutes of the game. Integrating community events (squad games) into the game itself. Highlight squad ladders & tournaments. Allow for squad unique banners that can appear on your ship. A modern game engine that isn't custom built (UE, Unity, Godot, etc). Modern graphics without extreme levels of effort. Improvements around player interaction. Allow for commands to be more expressive, and additional controls for the commander to better express their game plan.I put little to no thought into the game when it comes to the specific units within the game (factions, tech trees, etc). That's a problem for the community core editors, or in lack thereof, the mid to late beta of the game. Most of the points above were just theoretical and never worked on -- those were just my goals.

Not familiar with Overwatch so I have n idea what Mercy's beam is.
One of the things that has been discussed a lot has been getting new players into fighter and/or interceptors ASAP to shoot things.
Get them into the action as quickly as possible and get them hooked.
Nanning doesn't really have that affect on most new players.

The rest of the ideas sound interesting.
It would be great if you can get back to your Allegiance 2 project at some point in time.
Even something rudimentary and share it with the other developers.
Maybe one of them would pick up the ball and run with it.

The nan thing was just an example, it would apply to all sorts of situations. Lower the barrier to gameplay is the overall idea. An example of Mercy's beam is here (YouTube).

After watching the video for that Mercy's bean, that would be an awesome idea for a reworked nanite.

Speaking of TF2 medic... Why not make an uber healing so you can not be killed for x seconds (medigun) or double damagepoints (kurtzkrieg). Or that graviton bomb which sucks everything in (that Overwatch thingy)?
