The current tax free exemption for Canadians visiting the US is as follows:
Less than 24 house: $0
After 24 hours: $200
After 48 hours: $800
A couple can enjoy a long weekend in the US and return with $1600 worth of goods tax free.
That's a lot of stuff considering gas, beer, liquor and tabaco are 3-4 times more expensive in Canada than the US (our sin taxes are incredibly high).
On top of that literally everything in the US is 25%-50% cheaper than in Canada.
When I was younger I would spend the weekend in Buffalo, catch a Bills game, usually see a pretty good live band or two and have some great meals.
Gas up the truck, get a bunch of cheap liquor and cigarettes and usually buy some clothes/shoes/work boots, etc., which were all way cheaper in the US.
Sometimes I would even grab some groceries or stuff for the house but only if the price was right.
A fun weekend away and return home with bargain goodies.
So yes, cross border shopping can be worth it especially when there is a strong Canadian dollar.

oregon doesn't have sales tax, WA is the highest in the country. People on the borders make runs to neighboring states to get stuff like booze and cigarettes (especially eastern WA to Idaho) since WA also has the highest sin tax in the nation.Ryujin wrote:QUOTE (Ryujin @ Jan 24 2018, 12:13 PM) I find that incredibly ironic, a everyone I know that lives in southern washington goes to "liberal" oregon to do their shopping!
But, we have cool stuff like good schools and infrastructure. check where states rank : https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states ... /education
Also, metz lives in the @#(!hole of WA. take what he says with a grain of salt
