If games can make money in development without being released, why would any game in development be released? Develop them for ever I say.

Hence Sunrodent will never have to answer the question, Chris Roberts will never fail and backers will never feel cheated.

Very interesting read.

I was psyched about this game when it was going to be a spiritual successor to Wing Commander/Freelancer, but now days IDK what to think. It's gotten so bloated and unfocused. This article re-affirms that worry. I don't doubt that they'll release an actual game at some point, but I don't think it'll be the game I pledged $60 for back in 2012/2013. I done growed up in the last three years and I have zero time to invest into an MMO, and a game as huge in scope as they're aiming for will require a hefty time-sink to really get into. Sort of like how the phrase "casually play" and "EVE" don't really mix. You either go full retard or you don't get to really experience what the game has to offer.

We'll see I guess. If anything maybe the single player portion will be solid.
You'll notice the first 10 pages of that scintillating bit of journalism are all anonymous quotes. Which is the hallmark of what kind of journalism?

CIG is no more the 2nd coming of Christ than any other venture, but they've got some truly brilliant people there, and are making great progress. I don't agree with all their design choices but the game is still very much in development and they do listen to their backers, at least the reasonable ones, and consider their feedback before proceeding on some developments, which is some developments more than anyone else would. Case in point, they are currently restructuring the flight model in its entirety, and have 600 players testing it with the express desire of getting some quality feedback from some of their more serious and helpful backers, to see if the idea has merit.

Name one other studio, or for that matter company, that takes such an approach. We're not talking market surveys, but chat forum discussions, and forum posting. Whether or not they get it "right" is totally up in the air, but their approach is spot on.

Frankly, the bulk of the naysaying is coming from people who don't like to see someone exceptional succeed because it makes them look bad.

The first chapter (of 3) of SQ42, the single player game, is supposed to launch at the end of this year, or the beginning of next. Speculations abound, but the fully functional universe will probably take a year after that, without necessarily the full complement of star systems, but essentially the full complement of game mechanics, subject to later revisions and additions of course.

Oh, and I glossed over your other point, Bacon, about time commitment. I am hoping, that it will remain enough of a skill-based game, and all of the vocal and omnipresent backers seem to be more on the same page in this way than any other, that progress in the MMO sense won't define the experience. Combat, at least, will remain more about personal skill than how much grinding you have done to get the bestest ship. Of course, you need to practice to git gud ;)

But I don't think the experience will be closed to the casual player. It will be rich for someone with more time, they will be able to explore more facets of the game, but if someone just wants to step in, log some dogfighting, and walk away, there will always be room for that. Both in the universe, where getting hired as a merc, or working as a pirate, or what have you, will be constantly available work, but don't forget there's the whole Arena Commander module(s), which are exclusively for logging in, doing your pure combat, and logging out. Right now, we can run upgraded ships in these modules as we like, such as upgrades are available which asides from weapon choices there isn't much variance, but I presume down the road you will be able to choose stock loadout matchups, so it is all about skill as opposed to $$.

And Arena Commander is where I see a massive void waiting to be filled with a combat game with strategic elements, as opposed to perpetual furballs, and team furballs. Where a module structured similiarly to Alleg is screaming to be born.

I will put my money on it being released, just not finished (but then, what game ever is?).
You are entitled to keep thinking I am an idiot and Im find with that, but then only history will prove it, and therefore I can wait for your apology. In honesty, I hope all transpires as you hope because you and a lot of others really believe in this project deserve an outcome (which initially did too, though as soon as I saw the quantum of money being offered to 'kickstart it' knew it was going to have massive issues to deal with outside of just the game).

My cynical idiotic brain keeps relating to this metaphorical comparison:
Which donkey gets to the end of the journey faster (or at all)...the one who has the carrot dangling infront of its head all the way, or the one that gets to eat it first?

I still need to try the bloody game.
Made an account in 2014 but never played.cause their launcher does not run under Wine and downloading from my home connection would take weeks.
