I had wondered about the VW subsidiary marks - Audi, Skoda, Seat and so on. I imagine they're coming under a lot of scrutiny right now.

It's OK.

VW have discovered that it was a very small group of employees that were responsible. They have suspended them. Thankfully we can now be utterly reassured of Volkswagen group's integrity because they have acted so quickly and discovered that the company was not at fault anyway.

VW's new CEO is also a long standing group employee. So much relief there as well.

Volkswagen would also like to reassure their customers that an aircraft in which Herbie was travelling did briefly enter the airspace of Monte Carlo once, meaning they were technically compliant. However they are profoundly sorry that an external contractor may have misrepresented the extent to which he went bananas.

To confirm your suspicions in order to have that software defeat work right required two "mapping"s of the vehicle's performance. One to pads and another for the "extra performance that the customer expected".

It is a laborious process requiring 100s of hours of testing and I do not see how they didn't have to it twice from scratch but again this isn't my speciality, perhaps lexaal knows the details better.

Don't you worry Duckie old shoe the US government and our horde of blood err money thirsty civil lawyers will save the day n the fine tradition both sided play of kick the stinky foreigner from across the pond in their berries/balls/pills/nads (as lexaal pointed already *tug of the forelock*) when you can gain an advantage. Heck if we cannot get'er done everyone else wants a shot including zhee French

Some of the media is reporting details on the 36 vehicle test incorrectly.

If I understand right the ICCT testing shows every vehicle passes the current EU emission test but fail the proposed (I think it is still just a proposal) test. This test is supposed to be more "real world representative" similar to the US 06 change here. My response is meh, real world is vastly different for someone living in the Alps vs. someone living in London. Also changes in altitude, temperature, humidity, throttle tip in, road conditions, wind speed, etc etc mother $#@!ing etc make "real world" testing a nightmare to enforce and dream to twist into a pretzel.

Outrage creep multiplied by news cycle requirements raised to the power of smug wikigeniusness will almost certainly cause a hysterical uninformed reaction from all of our little country's Overlords.

It is simply, VW decided they wanted to rule the Automotive world by smashing rather then playing in the cat turd filled sandbox like everyone else. Blaming everyone else for having sand castles with cat turds in them seems myopic to me.

Now the dust is slowly settling interesting details come to light.

Our little gov't™ did know for years the figures didn't match the reality on the street. Sales of 4100 diesel cars is "temporary" halted here. Also in Belgium and Switzerland it seems to be halted. The euro5 diesel engine (EA189) also seems to be placed in other subsidiary brands.

Euro6 engines are not affected according to the VW importer here.

In Belgium the Euro5 engines will be changed to Euro6 engines free of charge.

According to De Telegraaf (a Dutch newspaper). In Belgium if you ordered a euro-5 diesel car it will be upgraded to a euro-6 disel car free of charge.

QUOTE In België worden de orders voor een Euro 5-dieselauto nu kostenloos omgezet naar een Euro 6-uitvoering.[/quote]
I assume this will be for the new cars to be delivered.

According to another newspaper the new VW Overlord Matthias Müller has proposed a recall for all cheating VW cars for a software update. The plan has to be approved by the regulators.

http://www.ad.nl/ad/nl/1012/Nederland/arti...lkswagens.dhtml

I am not really sure what Mr Matthias Müller wants to achieve with this plan, since it does not stop the polluting. IIUC programming the car to acceptable emission levels would make it a sluggish low powered vehicle. Or does he want to include a user selectable "sport" menu setting for normal driving and an "economic" menu for clean driving?

There will be no replacement, just a "software downgrade": reduced engine power and/or higher fuel/DEF (AdBlue) consumption, but lower emissions... ;)

A German paper made a more or less complete list with the cars involved.

It involves the 1.2L (unclear) / 1.6L and 2.0L EA189 engines with manufacturing dates 2009-2014. They are Euro-5 engines. Euro-6 engines are not affected. So far it is unclear if other engines have the same issue.

Added to the known list:
Audi A1, A3, A4 and A6, Audi TT, Audi SUV Q3 and Q5 .
VW Caddy and VW Transporter

Right it isn't VW cannot pass, they can of course, and glad to hear they aren't wasting money vast sums to not address the issue in a way that is worthless other than a mea culpa.
