The 2014/2015 Default Keymap Project

I've been lurking the forums for a couple of weeks now with the full intention of trying to get back into the game in some fashion. It seems like every other thread has a reference to the bizarre and useless original MS keymap and how it needs to be changed, how it's killing recruiting, etc. And as a (hopefully) returning player, I'm going to have to face re-mapping soon as well.

So: Let's fix it, already.


The Steps:

1. Select a better default keymap.

2. Modify the training mission as necessary to support the new default keymap.

3. Roll it out and rejoice.


Step 1 will no doubt be filled with drama. Step 2 will hopefully be filled with technical weenies. Step 3 may be filled with new recruits who last more than 10 minutes.

The very first thing to do is collect current player keymaps and see what everyone is using. Then we can compare them, pull out the patterns, and debate the finer points. This is where you all jump in and post your control scheme in the following format:

QUOTE 1. General control method (keyboard & mouse, joystick, other peripherals).

2. Model of joystick or other peripherals if applicable (ex. Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog or Logitech Attack Stick or Belkin n52).

3. Keymap as found in Allegiance (I can't remember if there's any easy way to export this).

4. List of any keys programmed to a joystick or other peripheral outside of the game itself (using other mapping software).[/quote]
Items 1, 2, and 4 will give other players a better idea of how your overall scheme works, since those things can have a pretty big effect on the usability of a given keymap.

Just save the drama of voting on the best keymap and just use the one from the Allegiance Academy. "I started with the Alleg Academy keymap this a modded it as I went" - this can probably be said by the gross majority of the Alleg pop. (including myself).

Also, we need to change this asap. We can worry about the training missions later, I'm sure most noobs don't even bother with them anyways. Perhaps put up a popup for first time players saying the keys have been changed for convience and to disregard the training missions till they are fixed.

at the very least the joystick axis need to be fixed. WASD to thrusters is probably the preferred method for most people too. Target nearest enemy would be the last essential IMO. I dont know if those are included in default/academy or not, i've had the same map for years.

It would be nice to be able to actually find the academy key map. I just briefly looked for it and the wiki has nothing when searching even for "key"

The learning/cdt/whatever they are now are full of broken links as well. I'm sure that is helpful

Ya, I agree 100%. No need to spend to much time on the finer points. Get it out, Let the RankNerds argue over this and that after the fact. Otherwise it will be 3 months from now. People will either forget about it or get burned out about fixing it (again).

1) I need info on the joystick problem. I do have a js to test with but I only tried once playing alleg on it so I wouldn't know whats wrong. Post it here or http://trac.alleg.net/

Whoa, hey, I didn't see that other attempt at this project. I'm glad all of the work is already done. Good enough!


I don't remember any issues with the joystick (I never flew with anything else)... is one of the axes just inverted by default?




EDIT: So what exactly is required for fixing the training mission? I read something about voice-overs, but I presume there is on-screen text to change as well...

If I'm correct,someone could set that up in their client install,then just post it here as the "AA inputmap1.mdl"? Or is there more to it than that..

I know it will be included in R8,but could it be added to the install/update sequence right now?
