The idea is that the excess heat that would be lost from it escaping around the sides is captured back into the pot itself.

I've seen a few versions of this. Pretty neat idea. Yay efficiency! Some of the other versions look easier to clean than this one.

If you built some sort of box around the pan enclosing it with the heat source, you could capture even more heat.
Oh yeah, its called an oven.

Yea, the problem with ovens is the whole "heating all the air" thing, which, I'm sure MrC will gladly talk again about being horrible and dumb.

Who said anything about air in the oven? Pump the air out to a hard vacuum, cover the food with a fine coating of gold, and switch from gas to a nice strong magnetron.
Anyway, I don't need any help flying this thread to Cuba Viscur, go find some peanut packets and watch the inflight movie.
