Zombies were 'believable' as re animated dead through necromancy and cooler because of this
The whole virus recent twist is even more prepposterous than the idea of dark magic

Eh well there are already several types of parasites and fungi that can override the infected creature's brain and make it act against it's own self-interest, and instead just on the survival and procreation of the parasite/fungi.

An easy reference is the fungal spore that hijacks ants (and has about 500 different strains hyper focused for other specific insects)... It can wipe out entire colonies of millions unless the corpse is properly disposed of.

I hear you, but they aint walking corpses, the bodies still have to function to stay alive even though it kills them in the end. (i guess its that these shows try to so hard to make it explainable instead of jsut making it 'WTF?I dunno...JUST RUN!')
Eating brains for energy is fine as post Romero zombie law, but a creature has to digest them if we are going the 'biological explaination' route. Zombie films that portray heads upper torsos living without 'animation' are annoying considering this explaination or rules. Even ruptured bodies wouldnt keep a zombie functioning.
I like zombies, but just make them unexplainable.

Dont start me on vampirism and how they have tried to medicalise that one....

I am now reading this, or was, as I put the book down when I came to the part where the highly trained protaganist, -

Lee Harden
Special training by 'several different Special Ops.' (Seal mentioned by name)
Two years combat service, Ranger in Iraq.
Attained rank of Captain. ...

- gets ambushed while doing 'recon' right outside his own house.

I picked up a copy of "Earth Abides" by George Stewart and started to read that. Maybe when my anger cools, I'll go back to reading the other one.

Man I hate some books, so hyped up and then they can be so bad!

For some reason people keep giving me Tom Clancy books even though I hate his work (though RIP Mr C). For some reason people assume I like Tom Clancy because I have lots of his books because people keep giving me his $#@!ing books!

For a hilariously bad read on how technology works and how to write stupid characters and a stupid plot in a stupid "future" world read Tom Clancy's "Net Force" series.

For as much as I love zombies and stuff I don't think there are that many good books. World War Z kept me hooked while I was reading it, mainly I think due to the style it was written in as a series of interviews, but after comprehending the information the book gives it's just horrible everywhere, plot, characters etc... and Zombie Survival Guide is just plain stupid. Then somehow I got recommended Pride and Prejudice and Zombies which is actually how I would probably write a book, 99% copy-pasta and judicious use of 'find-and-replace' and inserting the word "zombie" throughout.

For zombie media it's really films and games for me, haven't found a book or TV show yet that I can say I actually like. Oh apart from Dead Set, that was actually quite a good zombie TV-Series.

I didn't like that part either, and in fact the entire first few days of the story line were really annoying and filled with me saying, "oh my god why would you do that" but it gets better and he does some real hero @#(! later.
"You give my regards to St. Peter. Or, whoever has his job, but in hell!"

Zombie movies are meant to be watched. Not meant to be scientifically accurate, nor even mildly realistic. Probably that is why there are no good zombie books.

However they translate super well into comic books/graphic novels.

Crossed's approach to it is novel.

The walking dead is waaaaaaay better as a comic book. (I dislike several of the tv adaptions, ie slow 2nd season, @#(!ty characters minus Darryl and Merle, different far inferior prison vs governor resolution).

One of the adaptations to comic books that I also enjoy are WWII rewrites where Nazi scientists release that plague as things start to go downhill for them.

Actually, yeah, crossed is probably the best "zombie" comic out atm. It deals wIth people who retain their intelligence more or less - just go completely amoral and apt to group psychosis under various strongmen. A lot of rape, masturbation with knives and murderporn happens. A lot more mind-$#@!ing, body desecration and greater destruction potential too. (The crossed in Israel are thought to have launched a few nukes iirc)
