Found this: http://www.moddb.com/mods/raider-wars
Yea, too bad the project died.

Allegiance is an amazingly unique game. I think it needs a few things -

Scalable Resolutions for the Lobby - 800 x 600 default is unacceptable.

Updated, Modernized UI

Instant Matchmaking and Game Browser

A strong consistent vision.

A Commander Ranking System (CRS), visible in the Lobby and Game Browser UI.

A formed business entity to purchase the rights from Microsoft. (Articles of Incorporation, Equity, Bank Accounts, CEO and BOD).

Equity Investors (Donators from the community).

Now. I'll put my money where my mouth is. I'll put up $500 for startup costs. I'll even volunteer my time as a non compensated director.

Now... If 99 other people match my investment, we'll have a balance sheet with 50k on it.

Assets = Liabilities + Owners Equity
$50,000 = $0 + $50,000

Here is how I suggest we should spend it.

Prioritize a To do List
Hire a CEO
As the CEO completes the to do List, compensate CEO accordingly. The CEO will be able to leverage the balance sheet (Cash) to accomplish the list.

Discuss.

Would be even worthwhile if we could say "hey, we have at least a thousand guys willing to promote the crap out of this game if you decide to go for it."

So lets get this going. Whats your plan of action @Spunky?

unfortunately, this very rarely works and it's a very naive approach.

otherwise anyone with enough cash would hire people to create successful games or movies or companies or whatever endeavor. and yet we don't see that happening very often. it's rare in fact.

why ? because cash is only the fuel and a tool and can't "buy" everything.

it's not enough to just "throw" money at people and they' ll do awesome stuff. it doesn't work like that at all.

People who are only motivated by cash or gain and follow instructions / todo list made by the ones who are paying don't usually produce interesting stuff.

it how humans are and we can't change that. And it's a good thing.

We need a self appointed CEO with a vision, strong leadership and motivation.

That's is who business angels and investors are looking for every day. They don't bet on ideas, concepts and plans or todo list. They bet on people and teams.

Allegiance is 10+ years old and is known enough by a lot of people in the gaming industry who have access to huge resources and funding.

And yet still no one ever tried to do a game like Allegiance.

on that meditate further I will.

* points to the Count's words *

One of the more famous current US Football players (name esccapes me atm) dumped his entire fortune ( over a hundreds of million iirc) into a game development studio. It went tits up pdq. While I do not share the same level of pessimism\realisn of the Count I do think it is will be something that inspires people to do it to make it go. In that vein Extra Credit awhile back allowed you to bid, for charity, on the ability to chose a topic revolving around game play. I actually bid into the four figures for that right, intending, anonymously all the way around, to make it about how to revive a game like this one... well exactly like this one. I didn't win obviously, but imho that is the right way to be thinking. Leveraging every resource we have to build more resources from it.... or one of us can just pony up a @#(! bucket of capital and give it a whirl. I think that was what Thallium was driving at in his post btw.

edit: no cap on the Count's name

In the 80's, I had friends that worked for a company called Control Data. They had a server in Minneapolis called Plato that ran a game called Empire. Very similar in game play as Allegiance only with 80's graphics, etc. It was played by people who's companies were using the server and it's storage so different divisions of companies would form their own teams to battle against other teams. The reason it had a good player base was that a lot of the people had these smart terminals at home or played on them at work during off work hours.

I just put that out there as an idea as how the team aspect of the game can be utilized. I think one of our most important steps at this time is to find out how to contact Microsoft and "remind" them that they still have a dynamic game out there and if they don't care about it, please release the rights and make it open source, or re-develope and market it to see where it will go in the "modern" world.

I don't find that too unusual given how it flopped and while they may know "about" Allegiance, they don't really know what makes Allegiance tick. Since it's viewed as part of the space genre, a genre that died out and was always more defined by Wing Commander style mission-based single-player gameplay than anything else, building something like Allegiance without a clear idea of what you are doing and what end result you will get would be a huge gamble.

It wouldn't be too far from what the original devs had to go through who had the commanding, teamwork and pacing absolutely right, but everything else horribly wrong.

There must be a way to communicate what we know about how to make something like Allegiance "work" to developers that would be interested in it.

Want bigger games? Log on to play at the official game time: 9pmET/8pmCT/7pmMT/6pmPT every day of the week. Also Saturdays 8pm UTC.

If we had a nickle for every post suggesting a rewrite of this game, we'd have enough for a rewrite.

There's just no market for this game. Any smart investor can see that.
[15:25] <BBT_> oh, so da vinci's mona lisa isn't his work?
[15:25] <+fuh-zz> No, he simply put effort into it.
[15:25] <BBT_> are you really that retarded?
