pkk wrote:QUOTE (pkk @ Nov 27 2012, 02:55 AM) Do you get that error at step seven (see below)?

I think so, because you use Norton:
http://www.freeallegiance.org/FAW/index.ph...the_server'

Error occurs at step 3, right after clicking "Login"...

It shows "Logging in......" at bottom left 'outer border' text panel of the window of the launcher itself, then in same area says "Failed to contact server, please try again later."

Usually is a 15 or so second wait on the first attempt, then less on subsequent attempts.

DXDiag indicates that Directplay is functional. Not sure what else to do as far as diagnostics.

Is there a utility to check your connection to the server? Or, perhaps PING the server directly? Or, to check your port forwarding/triggering? I've now forwarded all DirectPlay 8 ports... TCP and UDP... etc. No change in outcome.

Any utilities to check your DirectPlay connectivity?

---- OKKAY, pkk--- Something interesting. I am getting SOME connectivity to the Login server... Just for grins and giggles... I randomly typed in a password/Username combo. And, the server returned... "Username or password was incorrect." So, it is a port forwarding issue? Of some sort? DirectPlay is indicated to be working fine with DXDiag. Ports 80 TCP/UDP forwarded, so are 2300-2400... and the 6xxx one and the 4xxxx one as well.

ACSS (launcher.exe) doesn't use DirectPlay just HTTP/HTTPS to communicate with the server (acss.alleg.net).

I just took a look into the server logs (today, 7 am UTC):
ACSS was able to perform the autoupdate via HTTP and posted data via HTTPS.

Pinging from DOS prompt... DHCP associates acss.alleg.net to IP addy of: 204.14.17.27 However, no packets get returned. ICMP is off on acss.alleg.net?

Via http://ping-the-server.com/... the IP addy returns that port 80 is open... so, I should be able to ping, correct? Or, is that a function of ICMP alone being off so no ping returned...

You're unable to perform a ping, because ICMP is blocked.

pkk, can you see any activity related info for my login attempts? Is there any diagnostic procedure that exists via a utility or even possibly server-side?

Could this have anything to do with the lack of people online when I try to login?

http://asgs.alleg.net/asgsnet/currentplayers.aspx

Or, is this just people logged into the website?

No, anything ASGS related simply doesn't work anymore.

Look at output.log in your Allegiance 1.2 folder. When it's logging in it should say something like:

11/28/2012 5:05:16 AM UTC: AssemblyLoader::ValidateEntryAssembly() machine info created.
11/28/2012 5:05:16 AM UTC: AssemblyLoader::ValidateEntryAssembly() calling checkin.
11/28/2012 5:05:17 AM UTC: AssemblyLoader::ValidateEntryAssembly() calling checkin.
11/28/2012 5:05:17 AM UTC: Login Succeeded

What does yours say? Can you go to http://acss.alleg.net and login there?

@acss.alleg.net I get:

"CSS - Main Menu
Home
Stats »
Squads
My Account » Logged in as: iPPCs"

As my page status after login. So, the login part is not the problem.

Am wondering if there is anyway to create a utility that would help simplify the login 'trouble shooting' process. Just a thought. Nice enough to just have Allegiance around still. I played a few years back, thought it had disappeared actually, the servers had gone down. However, when I just the 'online' activity, it shows noone ingame from the webpage of ASGS, which I am assuming it 'normal' since you have stated that ASGS no longer applies. Is this correct? Or, does ASGS still poll the same server that hosts the game?

This seems useful! The indication here is some sort of malady with the 3.5 .NET installation?
Well now, I have a better idea of what needs to be worked on!
Any suggestions?
The oddity is, .NET installed with no visible errors to screen. Need to figure out where the .logs are for it and see if there is anything I missed, which this log seems to indicate something 'is' missing.

Thanks for leads, pkk. Am not sure 'exactly' what to do at this point. But, this has I think defined the difficulty.
