Played the first few missions and it's pretty good so far. Starts a bit slow for those of us used to this kind of flight model, but the last dogfight of the training mission surprised me enough that I actually lost.

It doesn't have quite as much inertia as Alleg, perhaps, but there's enough that I appreciate having the vector indicator on my HUD, and sometimes have to hit my afterburners to avoid crashing into the Theseus.

Flight physics are actually closer to Alleg than Freespace or Wing Commander.
I contributed a fair amount to how the flight model and physics work, and Alleg was definitely something I tried to take inspiration from. It's different, and no substitute, but IMHO it turned out rather well given the constraints. Momentum matters, using 6DOF matters. Situational awareness matters most.
Of course, the raider AI is nerfed like crazy and doesn't make use of anything interesting, but you've got to make some concessions if you want to survive fighting two dozen of the things at once in SP.
I definitely recommend giving it a shot (although I am, of course, extremely biased in that regard
).
Multiplayer hasn't been very thoroughly tested (we didn't have the resources) but I hope it turns out fun.
P.S. I miss Alleg, I occasionally check to see if there are enough players on for me to jump in, but there never are. Good luck holding things together, the rest of the gaming world doesn't know what they're missing.

Yeah, sorry about that. For whatever reason, we decided to mostly keep the controls the same as their FS2 origins rather than set up something brand new. Custom keybinds are definitely essential.Psychosis wrote:QUOTE (Psychosis @ Sep 6 2012, 01:49 AM) the control setup makes me want to facewall... I have a bastardized version of my alleg scheme setup, but goddamn..
QUOTE I vaguely recall another game like this called, also called Diaspora, that I played in the early 2000's. Anyone know what I'm talking about?[/quote]
Probably this?
